HOME: The True School - Beyond the Painted Windows by Baldry, Betty

    J. M. LeBel Enterprises Ltd., 1988. 100 pages including 3 pages of references. This is a pioneering Canadian book on home education. Probably the worst looking book in our inventory, with scuffed and battered soft covers, it is nonetheless still sturdy (as to binding) and internally vg - text clean & tight. Ex-library with front endpaper (which was also the title page) removed, inside front cover showing peeled spot from pocket removal and apparent coffee stains which also somewhat affect outside of text block. Spine and fore edge of front cover reinforced with clear book tape. Betty Baldry "was a teacher for 30 years, during which she spent a great deal of time pondering the question of how children might be educated more naturally and with greater respect." The subtitle refers to her childhood experience in a school where the windows were painted white to prevent the outdoors from distracting the children! A very good homeschool primer, which in a surprisingly compact form covers why elementary education is best done at home (according to this veteran teacher); education research from around the world; a basic approach to elementary education, with one chapter apiece devoted to reading, writing, literature, mathematics, science, social studies, phys. ed., and art; and a final chapter of faq's. Really a rarity, both as in "hard to find" and as in a unique book to inform both beginning homeschool parents and their dubious family members.. Trade Paperback. Fair. 6 x 9 in. (15cm x 23cm). Ex-Library.
