Jacket with several tears at edges and lightly soiled, endleaves discolored, but overall tight and clean. 8vo. 57, [5]pp. Color frontispiece, black-and-white illustratrions in text. Original orange cloth; pictorial dust jacket. Signed by the author in Chinese characters and in roman transliteration. The author was born in Chang-Chow, near Amoy, Fukien, China, and later studied at Cambridge in England. He was China's first lecturer at the Williamstown Institute of Politics, and held numerous academic and diplomatic posts.

    Beverly Hills, 1958. unbound. 1 page on "International News Service" letterhead, 11 x 8.5 inches, Beverly Hills, California, April 14, 1958. Written by the influential Hollywood gossip columnist, responding passionately to Mayes's query regarding replacing the national anthem, in part: "...There have been many complaints that our national anthem is difficult to sing and is only for people with fine singing voices. Yes, it is difficult but it really doesn't matter if the anthem isn't sung well, just so we know it, and even if the lyrics are only spoken, let's hear them. Writers such as Francis Scott Key are not born every day...This great song has strength and power and has been the theme of hundreds of thousands of men and women who have died on the fields of battle..." One handwritten correction; horizontal folds; small creases at the corners. Very good(-) condition.



    Important and Friendly Autographed Letter Signed by SONDEHEIM, Stephen (1930 - )

    New York, 1964. unbound. Written on both sides of a 4 x 5.25-inch personal monogrammed card, New York, May 24, 1964. Written to up-and-coming musician Frank Underwood, in part: "...I'd be delighted to listen to your songs. Two things, however: (a) I'm a very harsh critic, and (b) I'll need a couple weeks more before I have the time. If you"ll give me a call around the beginning of June, maybe then we can get together..." Accompanied by the original handwritten stamped envelope with Sondheim's additional signature and return address on the back. Minor staining; very good(+) condition. Underwood became the leader of the 1970s band Windsong, which featured Annie Lennox prior to her involvement with the Tourists and her international fame with the Eurythmics.
