This revealing letter, written to a young man and signed "G.W. Carver," is filled with personal observations on prejudice as well as his feelings about getting together to pursue their mutual scientific interests, in part: "You are quite correct, prejudice still exists in enormous proportions worse in some sections than others. Confidentially, dear, this is why I do not travel more than I do, as one of my age must have certain comforts in travel that are positively denied colored people in many places...The thing that I am most concerned about is how you and I can get together and pursue our scientific bent uninterrupted...I want it distinctly understood that you are my chosen Bro. One-Straw Revolution, The: An Introduction to Natural Farming by Masanobu Fukuoka

Appears as unopened, unread & unblemished with fine dark yellow boards in DJ displaying minor surface/edge/wear, as shown, with repaired closed tear. Preface bvy Wendell Berry & Edited by Larry Korn From the dustwrapper: "During the past forty years Masanobu Fukuoka has witnessed with indignation the degeneration of both the land and of Japanese society. In those years the Japanese have followed single-mindedly the American model of economic and industrial development, abandoning their rich heritage of working closely and simply with their land. Mr. Fukuoka, however, was determined not to forsake traditional farming. Instead, he refined it so that his natural farming method requires less labor and less disruption of nature than any other, while maintaining the same yields per acre as his farmer neighbors. In this highly sensitive and thought provoking work, Mr. Fukuoka describes the events that led to the development of his natural farming methods and the impact that it has had on his land, himself, and the thousands of people he has taught. He discusses the method itself and why he believes it offers a practical, steady-state model of how society can live on a foundation of permanence and simplicity. Mr. Fukuoka "understands the interconnections of farming with other aspects of culture, and his book is highly suggestive. He feels that natural farming proceeds from the spiritual health of the individual. He considers the healing of the land and purification of the human spirit to be the same process, and proposes a way of life and a way of farming in which this process can take place. As much as to change methods, this book aims to change attitudes: about nature, farming, food, and human physical and spiritual health. Masanobu Fukuoka received training in microbiology, specializing in plant diseases, and then worked for some years as an agricultural customs inspector. Then, while still a young man of 25, Mr. Fukuoka began to question the fundamental principles of modern farming. He decided to leave his technical career and returned instead to his village home where, over the next 35 years, he worked to develop a unique method of natural farming. Today he has a large following in Japan. He lectures widely, has written many articles and books, and spends much of his time sharing his philosophy and farming techniques with the many visitors who come to his farm overlooking Matsuyama Bay on the island of Shikoku in southern Japan. Larry Korn is an American who lives and farms in the mountains north of Kyoto, Japan. He has studied Chinese history, soil science and plant nutrition at the University of California, and has worked at Mr. Fukuoka's farm for a year and a half. He now grows rice, buckwheat, corn, soybeans and other crops by the natural method. Chris Pearce, who helped with the direct translation, lives in a commune on a remote island in southern Japan. Tsune Kurosawa is a Japanese farmer who worked and studied for more than a year with Mr. Fukuoka." Tan coloured boards with black lettering and kangi on the front in illustrated dustwrapper with a photo of the author on the back. Translated from the Japanese, Preface by Wendell Berry, and edited by Larry Korn. Illustrated with photographs and drawings by Chuck Miller.
