    A Trip to the Yosemite by Van Der Burgh, Caroline G

    Yosemite National Park: Yosemite Association. As New with no dust jacket. 2002. Limited/Numbered Edition; Signed by Illustrator. Original Wraps. An untouched, As New extremely scarce edition, limited to 250 numbered copies, this one (being 234) SIGNED by the illustrator Jane Gyer. The text pages were designed by Michael Osborne Design and printed letterpress on Mohawk Superfine text at One Heart Press in San Francisco. The book was hand bound into Teton cover using a Japanese-style stab sewing; Shortly after 1900, a strong-willed, intelligent, unmarried, and independent woman named Caroline Van der Burgh made a trip from her home on the East Coast to Yosemite Valley. She later self-published for her family an account of the journey by train from San Francisco and then by stage from Merced to the valley over the Santa Fe route .

George Fiske (1835-1918) was the first photographer who was a year-round resident of Yosemite. Most of the images in this volume are from the 1870 to 1890. Bad luck followed his legacy. Three quarters of Fiske's negatives and his equipment were destroyed in a 1904 fire. The remainder were consumed in another fire in 1943.

Ansel Franklin Hall (1894-1962) was a naturalist and the first Chief Naturalist and Forester of the United States National Park Service. From 1920 to 1923, Hall was the first Park Naturalist of Yosemite National Park. He established interpretive programs, founded the Yosemite Museum Association, produced geological models, native crafts and natural history specimens for display. This handbook about Yosemite was complied by Hall to provide an overview of the administration of the park, recreational activities and a science based review of the geology,animals and plants. Hall was also a mentor to a young Ansel Adams, just beginning his famous photographic career. The inscription is to Herbert Sonn, also know as "The Birdman of Yosemite". Sonn came to the park in 1914 as a visitor and stayed until 1937. He camped, made and sold novelty carvings of birds out of pine cones and trees, and gave entertaining bird lectures.

Dye from blue cloth has stained top of book in area approximately 1 1/2-2 inches wide at top and 1/2 - 1 inch down into text block and left a few drops to rear endpapers. Jacket barely affected by moisture, only a little spot to top inside of front panel. A few short horizontal creases to bottom edge of jacket and a couple dents, one to front panel and a deeper one to rear spine gutter
