Harrison. “One of the more important of witchcraft trials held under English Law was that of the Lancaster Witches for it examined the activities of a coven and provides some of the earliest evidence of the full witch-cult practice in England” (from the dust jacket). Where witchcraft lives. by VALIENTE, Doreen

London: The Aquarian Press, 1962. First edition. Hardcover. Small 8vo. pp. xi, [1], 7-112. Bound in publisher’s pale gray-green cloth. The binding is clean and tight with only the most miniscule signs of bumping to the upper corner tip of the front board. The dust jacket is price clipped on the inner flap and shows spots of wear and rubbing to the extremities. The head cap of the jacket spine is chipped (15 x 13 mm). The rear jacket displays some mild soiling and a couple of small tears (sealed). An ink stamp from the U.S. distributer Wehman Bros. (“Wehman Bros. Publishers 159 Main Street Hackensack, N.J”) is present in the lower margin of the title page. Interior pages are generally clean. Pages 92-93 contain a small, light manufacturing smudge. Doreen Valiente (1922-1999), often called “the mother of modern witchcraft” was a founding figure in the contemporary Wicca movement. During the 1950’s, while she served as high priestess in Gerald Gardner’s Brickett Wood coven, Valiente re-worked much of Gardner’s “Book of Shadows” liturgy into forms still used by many in the Craft today. Later Valiente led a successful fight in Britain against proposed anti-witchcraft legislation. Valiente’s first book, “Where Witches Live,” contains her own primary research into the folklore, witch traditions and witch trials of county Sussex. Valiente also included modern witchcraft practices. According to Ronald Hutton: “the greatest value of her first book to a historian…lies in its portrayal of witch ceremonies in the very early 1960’s” [Ronald Hutton, The triumph of the moon. Oxford, 1999, p. 310].

Melampronoea: or a discourse of the polity and kingdom of darkness. Together with a solution of the chiefest objections brought against the being of witches. by HALLYWELL, Henry

London: Printed for Walter Kettilby, 1681. First edition. Hardcover. First Edition. 12mo. pp. [16], 118. Re-bound / re-backed preserving the original calf boards. The boards are well rubbed but treated for preservation. Inner hinges are strengthened. No paste-downs or fly-leaves are present. This copy lacks the final blank leaf. A signature – “John Brand 1802” is printed in a miniscule early hand on the verso of the title. (Uncertain if this is the famed English antiquarian John Brand (1744-1806). Hallywell’s book is not mentioned in the sale catalogue of his library printed in 1807). The interior pages contain some age-toning. The leaves in gathering H (pp. 101-112) are browned. An occasional minor marginal chip or tear is neatly repaired. A small tear in the upper corner tip of the title page is sealed. Miniscule marginal corner-tip chipping is present to the first few leaves. The last two leaves contain marginal chipping to the fore-edges. Bottom marginal edge and corner to page 81 is rough. Henry Hallywell, a Cambridge Master of Arts and Fellow of Christ’s College, was a friend of the Cambridge Platonist Henry More. Hallywell’s “Melampronoea” is a polemic against skeptics who would deny the existence of the “kingdom of darkness,” fallen angels and witchcraft. The author strongly believed that witches and magicians could be in league with demonic agents. Hallywell discusses the nature and order of demons, and gives examples of demon worship, demonic possession, witchcraft and magic in reference to ancient and contemporary sources. An uncommon book. [Coumont H11.1; Rosenthal 4042; Cornell, p. 259; ESTC R9358; McAlpin IV, p. 57].

Paper label on spine rubbed. The volume contains 1.) Robert Calef's "More Wonders of the Invisible World" (first published in London, 1700), apparently reprinting the Boston 1828 edition. A facsimile of the 1828 title page follows the primary title. 2.) Cotton Mather's "Wonder's of the Invisible World" (p. 375-446) with a facsimile of the shortened 1693 third London edition. Cotton Mather, Minister of the North Church in Boston wrote his "Wonders of the Invisible World" to help stave off doubt over witchcraft trials following the Salem hysteria. Robert Calef's "More Wonders of the Invisible World" (first published in 1700) is an attack on Mather's position. [Coumont F50.2; Cornell, p. 103].

    Witchcraft by Pennethorne Hughes

Penguin, Harmondsworth, Middlesex, 1965. First Paperback Edition. Softcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Witchcraft, for most of us, is associated with Sabbats, black cats, and blood pacts with the devil. Pennethorne Hughes, however, has deliberately excised the sensation and legend in this scholarly study of a serious subject. Credence in the powers of witches he sees as the degeneration of very early religious beliefs and practices, which at their best expressed an essential human faith in the identification of man with nature, of the self with the cosmos. His full treatment of the early records and medieval background of the witch-cult draws in notable figures who seem to have dwelt on the fringe of a magical world-King Arthur, Jeanne d'Arc, Gilles de Rais (the original Bluebeard), and even Robin Hood. His evidence tends to suggest that some, at any rate, of the powers of witches were not to be despised. Witchcraft, with its extensive bibliography of occult books, has an interest for students of anthropology, psychology, and .religion: for the ordinary reader it offers a reliable history of a subject of unfailing appeal. The cover shows a detajl of 'The Last Judgement', attributed to Hieronymus Bosch, In the Groeningemuseum, Bruges. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 236 pages. Vertical crease to spine. Black titles spine. b/w. illustrations;. Includes bibliography & index. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 250 grams.
