Third volume was published seperately following the success of the first two volumes [ESTC No: T115862]. Small chip to head of third volume, small tear along inner edge of front free endpaper and small hole to middle of front free endpaper in volume one. Light scuffs to boards, with light wear to corners and spine ends. Small crack to lower front joint of volume one. Light foxing, some sporadic stains and smudges to leaves. Early owner signature to front free endpaper in all volumes. Francklin Thomas [1721-1784] was an English chaplain, writer, as well as playwright. Volume one includes sermons on the History of Joseph, Human Nature, On Friendship; Volume two features sermons on Forgiveness, Retirement, and Angels; Volume three includes some sermons on Visiting the Sick, On Prayer, On the Sacrament, and other topics. Includes 36 Cree grammar lessons and an A-Z list of English-Cree and Cree-English vacabularies. Harry Ernest Hives [1901-1974], a Church of England Missionary spent time among the Plains Cree and Woodland Cree. He began his missionary work at Cumberland House, Lac-La-Ronge, Payton, and Battleford. Hives was "indebted...to the Indians at Stanley and Lac la Ronge for their patience and carefulness in giving the exact shades of meaning," which enabled him to formulate the rules upon which the Cree language is based. Hives later served as the Commisary for Indian Affairs to the Bishop of Saskatoon. Wear and fraying at spine ends. Creasing to covers. A collection of [44] engravings by Antonio Tempesta [1555-1630] plus engraved title page, taken from the French Edition of Antonio Gallonio's work about the Tortures and Torments of the Christian Martyrs. Illustrations show images depicting human torture, devices, and various tools used throughout history. Early bookseller label of Henry March Gilbert [1845-1931] on upper left corner of front pastedown endpaper. Rubbing to corners and spine. Light staining to leaves and endpapers. Otherwise in very good condition. Atonio Gallonio [1556-1605] was a Roman priest in the Congregation of the Oratory. Interested in the Martyrs, Gallonio studied the various methods of torture they endured, resulting in a book on the subject, originally published in Italy in 1591. Later, he translated his work into Latin in 1594. These engravings are taken from the French Edition republished by Raphael Trichet du Fresne with the copper engravings from the Italian Edition. (See Touber, Jetze (2014). Martyrological Torture and the Invention of Empathy: Gallonio's Treatise on the Instruments of Martyrdom and Its Reception in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. p. 18). Gallonio's work remains one of the most influential sources on the history of human torture.
