The Chant And Service Book by Reverend Charles L. Hutchins

The same principal which guided the editor in the preparation of the Hymnal, viz., to provide for the needs of the average choir and congregation, has guided him in his work on this Chant and Service Book; and he sincerely hopes that it may be found useful wherever it is adopted. Concord, Massachusetts, Sept., A.D. 1894..." Preface from The Chant And Service Book

High Holiday Prayer Book by Rabbi Morris Silverman

This book is written in Hebrew and English, and once was a congregational book of Congregation Agudas Achim. The outside cover has some wear and the outside pages are stamped with previous owner's mark. Like most machzorim, the Silverman primarily consists of the liturgy itself, in Hebrew on the right and in English translation on the left. Occasionally editorial commentary is inserted in the form of notes or footnotes. And occasionally passages from the Hebrew are left untranslated. I'm sure there's a lot to be said about the choices of what to include and not to include in the liturgy and particular translation choices that lie far beyond my extraordinarily limited Hebrew (and my basically non-existent Aramaic). But in this post I just want to point to a few things in the Silverman that strike me as interesting and potentially suggestive of larger questions in American Jewish culture.

Even the most imaginative and farsighted of the men of the mid-19th century-men like Jules Verne in technology or Admiral Mahan in naval strategy-saw only in dim outline a few features of the middle of the twentieth century. We now have a range of technology that would have astonished even Jules Verne and it is by no means clear to us what the shape of the mid-twenty-first century will be. We too may see some shapes, some outlines. That is what this book is about." - Foreword, Man on a Spaceship

The pages are yellowed and tanned "This book is intended to help clergy and people to celebrate those holy men and women who are commemorated as 'Lesser Festivals and Holy Days" in the calendar of The Alternative Service Book 1980 . Although 'Commons" are provided in that book for each class of saint (martyr, bishops and so on), these lack any particular reference to individuals. Thus many of those who are accustomed to a daily eucharist have found that repetition of this material, and especially the Collects, fails to provide a variety rich enough to celebrate the individuality of each saint in the calendar...." - Introduction from The Cloud Of Witnesses: A companion to the Lesser Festivals and Holy Days of the Alternative Service Book 1980

Divine Liturgy OF The Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church with Variables, Complete Rubrics and Commentary The Saint Sarkis Church, by Saint Sarkis Church, London

This book is as new. The only problem is that it does not have a dust jacket. "The present translation of the Divine Liturgy of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church has been made from the 'Mystery-Book' printed in Jerusalem in 1927 in accordance with the reading ofthe oldest texts under the supervision ofthe late Armenian Patriarch ofJerusalem, Archbishop Eghishe Durean (1860-1930). The Armenian Liturgy has had several translations into English. Almost all the previous translations are out of print. Some of them are incomplete, in that they do not contain the celebrant's secret prayers. Others are printed together with the liturgies of other churches and are intended for purposes of study by liturgists. All of them are arranged in a manner which is confusing to the reader, especially to those who try to use them for devotional purposes during the performance of the Sacred Liturgy. Above all, none of them is wholly satisfactory from the point of view of exactitude of rendering. In this respect the best among them are the works of F. E. Brightman and of F. Theodorus Isaac (Ter-Issahakian)." - Preface, Divine Liturgy OF The Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church with Variables, Complete Rubrics and Commentary The Saint Sarkis Church,

He has drawn on vast, miscellaneous, and scattered sources; the conciseness and coherence of his conclusions are impressive...." - Editor's Preface by Daniel J. There is a marking on the front end page. The pages are yellowed and tanned. "This writer of too many books was confirmed in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion in New York City at the age of about thirteen. He was a very devout little boy and had made promises to his mother; the sips of communion wine which he took in that church were the only drops of alcoholic liquor that have passed his lips in eighty-five years. But the church did not hold him, because he saw, in all the world around him, cruel poverty in the midst of great riches, and he left the church to become an agitator of what he called "social justice." That went on for some seventy years; until, left alone, he wished to marry a lady who was a member of the Episcopal church. So it came about that he became acquainted with the rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in his home town of Monrovia, California...." - Foreword By Upton Sinclair from Tongue Speaking: An Experiment In Spiritual Experience

An Era In Anglican Theology: From Gore to Temple by Arthur Michael Ramsey

This book is in good condition. The cover has some wear on the front and back boards, but mostly on the spine. The lettering on the spine is beginning to fade. The edges have minimal wear and there is some bumping of the corners. There are stains on the front and back boards. The previous owners signature is on the front end page. The pages are starting to yellow and tan. The binding is tight and solid. "It is often said that a new era in Anglican thought began with the publication of Lux Mundi in 1889, and it is no less certain that this era ended when the Second World War began in 1939. It has been my aim in this series of Hale Lectures to trace the development of Anglican theology in this era, now that twenty years have passed since its conclusion and we are able to see it in perspective. The choice of two illustrious names for the title explains itself. At the beginning of the period Charles Gore was becoming the dominant figure in Anglican theology, and his great influence persisted until his death in 1932. At the end of the period William Temple was at the height of his influence in and beyond the Anglican Churches, and in the double fact of his immense debt to Gore and his difference from him we may find a clue to much which was happening in the movement of Anglican thought. While the book has created the title, the title has in turn been allowed to influence the book in the giving of space to two of the greatest of all Anglican thinkers and teachers." - Preface, An Era In Anglican Theology: From Gore to Temple

The Book of Common Prayer by Century Hutchinson

This book is in very good condition. There is little to no wear on the cover boards. The previous owners name is written on the inside of the front cover board and his seal is affixed on the contents page. "It hath been the wisdom of the Church of England, ever since the first compiling of her Publick Liturgy, to keep the mean between the two extremes, of too much stiffness in refusing, and of too much easiness in admitting any variation from it. For, as on one side common experience sheweth, that where a change hath been made of things advisedly established (no evident necessity so requiring) sundry inconveniences have thereupon ensued; and those many times more and greater than the evils, that were intended to be remedied by such change: So on the other side, the particular Forms of Divine worship, and the Rites and Ceremonies appointed to be used therein, being things in their own nature indifferent, and alterable, and so acknowledged; it is but reasonable, that upon weighty and important considerations, according to the various exigency of times and occasions, such changes and alterations should be made therein, as to those that are in place of Authority should from time to time seem either necessary or expedient. Accordingly we find, that in the Reigns of several Princes of blessed memory since the Reformation, the Church, upon just and weighty considerations her thereunto moving, hath yielded to make such alterations in some particulars, as in their responsive times were thought convenient: Yet so, as that the main Body and Essentials of it (as well in the chiefest materials, as in the frame and order thereof) have still continued the same unto this day, and do yet stand firm and unshaken, notwithstanding all the vain attempts and impetuous assaults made against it, by such men as are given to change, and have always discovered a greater regard to their own private fancies and interests, than to that duty they owe to the publick...." - The Preface from The Book of Common Prayer
