Hydrogen Atom: Proceedings of the Symposium Held in Pisa, Italy, June 30-July 2, 1988. by G.F. Bassani, M. Inguscio, and T.W. Hansch [Editors]

New York, NY Springer-Verlag, 1989. Hardcover First Ed, unstated. Very Good: shows light wear to extremities; former owner's name at front free endpaper and at the top edge and fore edge; slightest spine lean. Binding secure; text clean. Despite noted flaws, remains clean, sturdy, and quite presentable. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 353pp. First Ed, unstated. Hardback: No DJ 'as issued'. Atomic hydrogen, the simplest of all stable atoms, has been a challenge to spectroscopists and theoreticians for many years. Here, as in similar systems like positronium, muonium and possibly helium, the accuracy of theoretical predictions is comparable to that of experimental measurements. Hence exciting confrontations are possible. This together with expected large experimental improvements explains the strong interest in the symposium held in Pisa in June-July 1988. The resulting book completely covers the precision spectroscopy of atomic hydrogen and hydrogen-like systems, and also discusses aspects of QED and the influence of strong fields.

Typed Letter Signed by FERMI, Enrico (1901-1954)

New York, 1939. unbound. very good(+). Outstanding and historically significant T.L.S. 4to., 1 page, Columbia University, Department of Physics, New York, April 10, 1939, only five months before World War II, to Dutch-born American physicist Samuel Goudsmit, informing him of a lecture tour to be given by German physicist and Nobel Prize recipient Werner Heisenberg, who would later become the leading scientist in Germany's attempt in developing an atomic bomb, in full: "You probably know that Heisenberg has been invited to come to the United States next summer. I understand that he will be in Chicago towards the end of June, and that he will be asked to give some lectures at Columbia and also at Perdue. I wonder whether it would be feasible to ask him to give some lectures also at Michigan?" *Samuel Goldsmit (1902-1978) was head professor of Physics at the University of Michigan from 1927-1946. On June 8, 1939, Werner Heisenberg, though the efforts of Enrico Fermi, extended his lecture tour of the United States to include the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor where he was a personal guest at the home of Dr. Gouldsmit. In 1944, under orders from General Leslie R. Groves, Gouldsmit was assigned to the top secret project ALSOS to determine how far Germany had advanced in the development of an atomic bomb. He arrived in Strausbourg in November 1944 and soon discovered files indicating that German work on the bomb had barely begun. He also learned that Werner Heisenberg, who was directing the German bomb effort, had relocated to Hechingen in Southern Germany. Within six months, Project ALSOS had seized all of Germany's leading atomic scientists, including Heisenberg, who was captured and arrested in Urfeld on May 3, 1945. He was taken to Heidelberg where on May 5 he met Gouldsmit for the first time since he guest lectured at UM-Ann Arbor in June 1939. Without a doubt a remarkable letter that is in excellent condition. Nobel Prize winning Italian physicist best known for his work on the Manhattan Project and the development of the first Atomic Bomb.
