Programming the Universe by Seth Lloyd

Seth Lloyd is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT and a principal investigator at the Research Laboratory of Electronics. He is also adjunct assistant professor at the Santa Fe Institute. He designed the first feasible quantum computer, and works on problems having to do with information and complex systems from the very small (how do atoms process information? how can you make them compute?) to the very large (how does society process information? And how can we understand society in terms of its ability to process information?). His seminal work in the fields of quantum computation and quantum communications--including proposing the first technologically feasible design for a quantum computer--has gained him a reputation as an innovator and leader in the field of quantum computing. Lloyd has been featured widely in the mainstream media including the front page of The New York Times , Los Angeles Times , The Washington Post , The Economist , Wired , The Dallas Morning News , and The Times (London), among others. His name also frequently appears (both as writer and subject) in the pages of Nature , New Scientist , Science , and Scientific American .

    Ancienne Arabie by MANESSON-MALLET, Allain

Paris: Denys Thierry, 1683. unbound. Miniature map. Copper plate engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 7 x 4.25". Sheet measures 8.25" x 5.5". This miniature map of Ancient Arabia details the Arabian Peninsula in classical times. Pictorial mountain ranges divide the region in distinct zones of Arabie Petree, Deserte, and Heureuse. Within, significant cities, and rivers are labeled. The map has a yellow border with pink trompe'loeil banner bearing the title affixed to it. The map appeared in the French edition of Manesson-Mallet's "Description de L'Univers" and bears the text "De L'Asie. Figure LXXX." in the top margin. It is in good condition with minor discoloration at the edges. Allain Manesson-Mallet (1630-1706) advanced from his position of musket bearer under Louis XIV to eventually occupy the position of "maitre de mathematiques" to the French King. He was the author and engraver of "Description de L'Univers," a five-volume survey of the world that included maps of the ancient and modern world, star maps, illustrations of flora and fauna, and information on the customs, religion and government of the many nations included in the text. At the time, the text was the largest and most comprehensive work of its kind ever published. Intended to entertain its readers, Mallet's "Description" was a time capsule of the 17th-century world that captured and displayed it in all its splendor.
