ODD FELLOWSHIP EXPOSED. AN EXPOSITION OF ALL THE SIGNS, TOKENS, PASS WORDS AND GRIPS BELONGING TO THE INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS, AS PRACTICED IN SAGAMORE LODGE, NO. 9, WITH THE FORM OF INITIATION, AND AN EXPLANATION OF THE FIVE DEGREES. BY AN EXPELLED MEMBER. SECOND EDITION by Odd Fellows

Exeter: Printed for the Publisher, and for sale by Booksellers Generally, 1845. 12pp, stitched in original printed yellow wrappers. Text untrimmed, with some dusting and light blank extremity wear. Good+ copy of an attractive, entirely unsophisticated pamphlet. With the ownership signature of George Lincoln, in the upper margin of the front wrapper. A rare revelation of this secret Order's sordid and nefarious rituals, by an expelled member from Sagamore Lodge No. 9, in Exeter, New Hampshire. Having been "basely deceived," he has a duty as a citizen to expose Odd Fellowship, which is "a most fearful enemy to our free and republican institutions." The pamphlet expresses common American fears of secret societies and secret rituals, which threatened the primacy of American democratic institutions. OCLC records a Dartmouth copy with this imprint and title, but without an edition statement. A similar pamphlet was printed in New York in 1846, with a slightly different title, promising to expose Odd Fellowship in all its American Lodges. OCLC 13635086 [1- Dartmouth] [as of 6/12]. Not in American Imprints, Sabin, Eberstadt.

He was brought up principally by his grandfather John Calvert (1814-1897), a widely travelled mineralogist who claimed extensive gold discoveries in Australia in the 1840s. Initiated as a Freemason in 1893, he became something of an authority on Masonic history in later life, though his work is not now highly regarded. Depending on Masonic help in his last years, Calvert died of cerebro-vascular disease in the Archway Hospital, Islington, London, on 27 June 1946, survived by his wife and four sons." - See Australian Dictionary of Biography. .

PROMINENT SHRINERS IN CARICATURE by HON, Billy

1929. HON, Billy. PROMINENT SHRINERS IN CARICATURE. San Francisco: Published by Billy Hon, 1929. Quarto: brown full-morocco leather, stamped in gilt, with the gilt-stamped name of "Jack Spaulding" on the front cover; 176 pages. First- and only- edition. Billy Hon [Wilfred Honigsberg] created the Billy Hon School of Cartooning, also known as the Western School of Cartooning. In its day, the school was the most-famous cartoon school in the country. Known as a hard-drinking and drawing guy, at one time Hon lived with Bud Fisher, the creator of Mutt and Jeff. The book has almost 200 caricatures of well-known Shriners, especially in the San Francisco area. This copy belonged to Jack Spaulding, who turned the annual Shriner's football game into the nation's first real all-star game, with players representing colleges from both the eastern and western sections of the country. The game attracts dozens of NFL scouts and is often a launch pad for future professional players. Spaulding's caricature appears on page 32. Signed presentation from Hon on the verso of the front endpaper: "To my real pal, Jack Spaulding- a regular fellow. Sincerely, Billy Hon." Very Good (some rubbing spine & edges, few tiny spots; contents clean & tight). Scarce! $275.00.
