Description:
Chicago, 1854.. 72pp. Original printed wrappers bound into modern cloth. Wrappers wrinkled, with paper repairs. Foremargin reinforcement on verso of front wrapper, similar treatment to upper margin of rear wrapper. Some moderate dampstaining, mostly in upper and lower margins. Occasional fox mark. Overall a good copy. An early history of Chicago, reprinting three articles that originally appeared in the DAILY DEMOCRATIC PRESS. William Bross and John L. Scripps (owners of the newspaper) claimed authorship of this title. This work is a forerunner of the long-lived ANNUAL REVIEW OF COMMERCE. It contains interesting material relating to the rapidly developing state of industry and railroads in Chicago, with commercial and agricultural statistics, and the like. The last five pages, as well as both sides of the rear wrapper, contain many local advertisements. Variant issues exist which contain folding maps, but the original edition was apparently not issued with a map, and both Howes and Byrd describe the…

Boston, 1884. 245pp. Original gilt pictorial cloth. Fine. The author travelled with a party of three others via the Great Northern to the Rockies, embarking then from Helena by stagecoach to San Francisco. After touring the state, the company departed for Colorado, taking the desert route, with a side-trip through Northern Mexico. Gunnison was awed by most of what he saw, and his sense of wonder transferred itself into a prose style rife with vaulted superlatives. COWAN, p.254.

Description:
Philadelphia, 1833. [2],[5]-151pp. Original cloth, paper label on front cover. Edgeworn, scattered foxing, tanned. Good. Godman, a Maryland born anatomist and naturalist, was the editor of the first medical journal published west of the Alleghenies. Tuberculosis compelled him to focus on literary endeavors, his MAGNUM OPUS being the three-volume AMERICAN NATURAL HISTORY (1826-28). The two works contained herein were originally published in THE FRIEND, a Philadelphia weekly. They include an account of Dr. Godman's life by Daniel Drake. Sabin omits this earlier edition, listing instead an 1836 version as the earliest printing of this title. "These sketches are considered the gem of [Godman's] literary publications" - DAB. SABIN 27664 (ref). DAB VII, pp.350-51.

Description:
Thomaston [Me.: D.J. Starret, 1851. [5],10-88pp., printed in double columns. Original printed paper wrappers bound into later brown cloth, leather label. Wrappers chipped at edges. Some dampstaining. Good, unopened. Adventures of a sailor on board the Chilean brig of war Achilles, originally published serially in a Thomaston newspaper. Wright's AMERICAN FICTION lists this, but cautiously notes that it is "based upon an actual trip." A contemporary review reads: "It is put forward as an authentic narrative, and many of the scenes appear too natural and life like to be an invention of the author. The very minuteness and novelty of the details preserve it from the charge of being an imaginary work. It is, however, a striking proof of the fact that truth is stranger than fiction, being full of stirring adventures, vivid scenes, and hair breadth escapes." SABIN 12800. PALAU 256530. WRIGHT 2:1964. New York & New Orleans, 1845. 216pp. Extra engraved titlepage. Contemporary black cloth, gilt pictorial cover, rebacked, contemporary gilt-lettered spine preserved. Moderate foxing, occasionally heavier. Good. A semi-leisurely tour with an ethnological emphasis. Norman's text addresses some of the most pressing Latin American concerns of the day, from Cuba-American commercial relations to Santa Anna's banishment from Mexico. The author waxes poetic on numerous topics, but none so eloquently as Columbus' well-travelled remains occasioned by a visit to his tomb in Havana. SABIN 30570

Description:
[Austin, Tx, 1905].. [8],258pp. manuscript. Folio. Light soiling, confined primarily to exterior leaves. Some light age toning. With authorial corrections throughout. Very good. In a brown half morocco box. Original draft of the novel, written when Clint Brown was an undergraduate at the University of Texas. Brown's conceit is that he has uncovered a manuscript written by Robert Blalock, a firsthand account by a young man who joins the Texas Revolution under the protection of an experienced backwoodsman, Ramrod Jones. It was published in 1905 by the Saalfield Publishing Co. in New York. This draft differs from the published version in various ways, and includes corrections by the author as well as the main draft. Clinton Giddings Brown went on to become District Attorney of San Antonio (1911-13) and then mayor of San Antonio (1913- 16). He continued to practice law until he retired, and published a book about his law cases entitled YOU MAY TAKE THE WITNESS (1955). OCLC lists only fifteen copies of…

New York, 1896.. 163,[1]pp. Portrait. Original front wrapper, rear wrapper and spine supplied in expert restoration. Otherwise very nice and clean. A good plus copy. In a folding fabrikoid box. Miller was born in 1851, attended Cornell, and went to Kansas in 1878. This colorful narrative of his life as a rancher there over the next five years is an excellent firsthand account of ranching in Indian Territory during that early period. Miller spent a year and a half in Alaska in 1898-99, and died in Binghamton in 1930. One of the best early accounts of Indian Territory, and quite scarce.
