Mandate Of Heaven: A New Generation Of Entrepreneurs, Dissidents, Bohemians, And Technocrats Lays Claim To China's Future. by Orville Schell

New York, NY Simon & Schuster, 1994. Hardcover First Ed; First Printing indicated. First Ed; First Printing indicated. Near Fine in Very Near Fine DJ: Both book and DJ show only minute indications of use. Book shows a tiny ding at the bottom edge of the front panel; just a hint of shelf wear; binding square and secure; text clean. DJ shows barely discernible rubbing; else flawless; price unclipped. Overall, very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 464pp. Hardback with DJ. In the wake of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, observes Schell, a generation in China has seemingly lost the grand hope of radically reforming the political establishment. Nevertheless, Schell ( To Get Rich Is Glorious ) offers valuable firsthand reportage not only on April-June 1989 but also on spontaneous acts of resistance and mini-rebellions since then. He also profiles China's new muckrakers, underground publishers, artists, rock musicians and entrepreneurs who are flourishing in "gray zones" of commerce and culture outside the party-state structure. If another upheaval comes, Schell surmises, it will arise over economic rather than political issues. He takes us inside China's abysmal prisons, arbitrary courts, the vast gulag of forced-labor camps and the nascent union movement. He interviews astrophysicist and dissident Fang Lizhi and exiled labor activist Han Dongfang. Schell's mix of trenchant reporting and political analysis makes him an indispensable guide to a new China struggling to be born.

Travels in Europe, for the use of Travellers on the Continent, and likewise in the Island of Sicily; not comprised in any of the former editions; to which is added An Account of the Remains of Ancient Italy, and also of the roads leading to those remains [provenance: contemporary French guide] by Starke, Mariana

Paris: A. and W. Galignani and Co, 1839. Hardcover. Very Good. "Ninth edition, considerably enlarged and embellished with a map." [2], v, [1], 712 p., 1 folded leaf containing a plan of the Forum Romanum; 19 cm. Contemporary dark green morocco spine; green and black marbled paper over boards. Five spine compartments between gilt rules. Gilt-tooled spine title: Starke's Italy etc. etc. Blue and white marbled endpapers in the Schrottel pattern. Text printed in columns. Includes index. Printed by Belin and Co., 55 Rue Ste. Anne--title page verso. Small bookdealer's stamp on front free endpaper verso and following blank leaf: "From Jones' Book Store, Los Angeles." Inscriptions by three former owners on blank page following front endpapers: Etienne Mastrallet, Guids Hospice on Le Cenis; Collins, Hotel Feder, Turin, "Best in the World"; and, slightly over the previous inscription, ?acet Jukna, Los Angeles, 1912. The first of these, Etienne Mastrallet, was a guide mentioned in A Hand Book for Travellers in Switzerland (London: John Murray and Son, 1842): "there is an excellent guide, Etienne Mastrallet, to be obtained upon application to the Hospice on the Cenis." A quote in French is written at the head of the dedication page (p. [i]), presumably by Etienne Mastrallet. The English author Mariana Starke (1762?-1838), who grew up in India and lived in Italy from 1792 to 1798, reinvented travel writing by expanding the focus from architecture and history for the use of young men on the Grand Tour to information useful for family groups: luggage, passports, the cost of food and housing in various cities. United States with an excursion into Mexico ; Handbook for Travellers by BAEDEKER, Karl

Leipzig: Karl Baedeker, Publisher, 1904. Cloth. Fine. Third Revised Edition. ciii, 660pp, with 25 maps, 35 plans, and 3 floor plans (Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Capitol and, the National Gallery). An exceptionally bright copy (owner's signature to the half-title), with brilliant gilt lettering, two woven silk page-makers, and richly marbled edges; the red flexible cloth covers unmarked, square and tight, the maps properly folded and free of tears. Hinrichsen E261. The first Baedeker title written originally in English; first published 1893. "The Romantic movement in Germany had given a new impetus to travel . . . In 1828 Baedeker bought the rights to J. A. Klein's Rheinreise von Mainz bis Köln and, after the death of the author, Baedeker himself revised and updated the work, recreating it for a new market. Using his own travel experiences he guided the tourist to the principal attractions in each place, saving travellers the expense of hiring their own guide. He thus created a new type of guidebook, which was widely copied throughout Europe and opened up tourism to a new class of visitor. The reliability of the information was ensured by annual journeys by Baedeker himself and by reference to respected published sources and expert scholars. . . . For the serious tourist a Baedeker was indispensable, its tone, especially with respect to southern Europeans, assuring northerners of their superiority, and suggesting ways of avoiding dangers. When Lucy Honeychurch finds herself 'In Santa Croce with no Baedeker' in E. M. Forster's A Room with a View (1908) she is entirely lost." (ODNB) Note: With few exceptions (always noted), we only stock Baedekers in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene wrappers.

Near Fine, pages and plates supple though marginally toned, binding square and tight with bright gilt, maps properly folded and free of repairs, neat marginal notes in pencil to several sections, light stain to front paste down. Provenance: Ink inscription, dated 1905, San Francisco, of Wallace Bradford to front fly leaf. An unusually well-preserved copy. Hinrichsen E256. "The Romantic movement in Germany had given a new impetus to travel . . . In 1828 Baedeker bought the rights to J. A. The A.M.C. White Mountain Guide

This is a rare, early 8th edition of "The A.M.C. White Mountain Guide" from 1931. This edition is one of only a few where the Guide was published with an illustrated front cover (the 7th and the 9th editions being the only others). The Guide comes with all of its maps, including the large folding map stored within a pouch on the inside back cover. "A Guide to Paths in the White Mountains and Adjacent Regions." Published by The Appalachian Mountain Club; Boston; 1931. Please see the photos for the complete list of contents. Great condition! Condition: Clean covers and spine with no stains; sharp corners; I am unsure if the book had originally been issued with colored letters and illustrations to the covers and spine but, if so, the coloring has since faded. Tight binding. Crack at hinge between the Copyright and Contents pages. The text pages are in great condition - mostly clean and white with only a thin stain strip at the top edge of a few of the pages at the back of the book. No writing, tears or foxing. All maps are present and in terrific condition - no tears found and all folding maps fold in/out easily with no tears. The map pouch on the inside back cover is firmly attached with no tears. Overall the book is in very good condition - buy with confidence! (NOTE: photo 1 of the front cover is actually a darker green than the image depicts; I used a close-up flash in order to show the illustration)
