Buffalo: Geo. H. Derby and Co., 1850 Full leather with gilt and black spine label. Exterior Fair-to-Poor, with front board detached and significant loss to leather portion of spine (label intact). Interior Very Good with solid, tight binding and clean, unworn pages. Tissue-guarded frontispiece engraving on higher quality paper depicts portraits of Madison and Monroe situated above an image of the Capitol building framed between two draped American flags. Engraving by Rice (presumably James R.) and Buttre (J.C) and with engraved signature also by C.L. Derby, brother of the publisher; they were two of the famous four Derby brothers, all 19th century bookmen. Tissue guard and frontispiece age-browned. Two small patches brown paper remnants stuck to inside rear cover. Moderate marginal darkened areas to inside front cover and blank front endpaper. Heavy scuffing and edgewear to boards, along with aforementioned deterioration of spine leather.
