Description:
Boston: James Redpath, 1863. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. 102pp. followed by 2pp. publisher's catalog. Original purple patterned cloth. Pale yellow endpapers. Gilt spine title. Spine tips worn and small hole in hinge, spine evenly sunned to tan. While serving as a nurse in the Civil War, Alcott wrote several letters to her family. At the urging of others, she prepared them for publication, slightly altering and fictionalizing them. The narrator of the stories was renamed Tribulation Periwinkle but the sketches are virtually authentic to Alcott's real experiences. BAL 145. This is Blanck's second printing, the first noted as being in green boards, no priority. It is thought that the cloth binding is the scarcer of the two issues.
