Philadelphia: Printed and published by the compiler, 1837 First edition of a classic American printer's manual, kept in print until 1864 and ultimately replaced as the standard manual by MacKellar's American Printer in 1866. Later cloth with gilt spine, new endpapers. . Octavo. With four plates, printed on a clay-finished paper, including three showing presses: the Ruthven, Philadelphia (Ramage) and Washington presses. Additional illustrations in text. Foxed throughout, as usual, bookplate of Jake Chernofsky (d. 2004), editor and publisher of the AB Bookman's Weekly. A very good copy. Though Adams borrowed heavily from Johnson and Hansard, there is new topical material in the press section, a polemic against stereotyping, and a scale of prices with tasks for typographical work.

[Oxford:] excudebat Johan. Crooke, 1696 [date in Greek]. First edition of the two antagonistic orations of Æschines and Demosthenes as edited, with a Latin translation, by the young Oxford students Peter Foulkes and John Friend, who were both about twenty when this volume was printed. Contemporary calf. Gilt spine with red morocco label. . Octavo. With three engraved portraits, of the two orators and of Cicero, by M. Burg; these are included in the pagination. The Latin translation is printed at the bottom of each page. Joints, corners a bit rubbed, a little light foxing. A very good copy. This was for many years a popular edition; and was reprinted in 1715 if not oftener: but the first is the preferable edition, and is considered very correct. The explanation of the more difficult Greek words at the end, was among the principal causes of its popularity" (Dibdin I, 487).

This edition is recorded in one copy only, at Harvard. There is no copy in England. STC notes: "The London part of the imprint is fake, probably printed at York. Contemporary tree sheep. . Twelvemo. With an engraved frontispiece and 196 woodcuts in the text, one to accompany each fable. Binding extremities lightly rubbed, some superficial cracks in spine. Several ownership notations on front endpapers, one dated 1823. A very good, attractive copy. Samuel Croxall (1688/9-1752) was a Church of England clergyman, educated at St. John's College, Cambridge. His first publications were anti-tory satires, purporting to be original cantos of Spenser, 1713-14. Several other whig celebratory poems followed. Croxall translated book 6…
