Description:
London: J. Debrett, 1784. First edition (viii, 378), Volume I only (of two). Duodecimo in full contemporary leather, skillfully repaired hinges. Portrait of Abercrombie as frontipiece. This, the first volume of Abercrombie’s book includes a discussion of propagation (seed, suckers, layering, cuttings, pipings, etc.) and botanical types (a capacious list of plants most suitable to one or another use). According to Fussell, John Abercrombie’s (1726- 1806) works proliferated over sixteen titles, some of which appeared in numerous later editions (The Gardener’s Pocket Journal and Annual Register, probably his last book, reached thirty-five editions by 1857), nearly a match for Arthur Young’s industrious output. Abercrombie, as with many writers of that day and this, found it useful to resurrect, expand, and recast earlier work, and, in the result, it might be said with Weston that Abercrombie’s titles are ‘so verbose and so confusing’ [This book’s title runs on for… Read more

Description:
London: Richard Bentley, 1850. First edition (xv, 192). Duodecimo, in olive green pebbled cloth with gilt and impressed decoration, gilt titles. Set as six dialogues, chiefly between Senex (as you would expect, the wise old angler) and Julian (the tyro); occasionally the conversation includes one or another local character who speaks a West Country dialect (‘Jack ‘ad cot a girt beg trout just agin thuck pwoast, and a run backerds to kip’s line tight, right bang auver oone o’ they hives. Massey haugh! What a buzzin’ and vizzin’ there was to be zhure!’), furnishing Senex the opportunity for friendly lectures on country values and comparative etymology. Akerman (1806- 1873), once secretary to the social reformer William Cobbett, is best known as an antiquarian (The dialogues are freighted with Latin and Greek phrases and tags) and more especially as a numismatist, the founder of the London Numismatic Society and the Numismatic Journal (ODNB). A fine, sharp copy of an… Read more

Description:
Paris: Chez Briand, 1790. First edition, in two volumes (pp. 396, 470), folding map showing Virginia north to the Great Lakes. Octavo, in recent modern three-quarter leather over complimentary marbled boards, five raised bands, gilt titles to spines, impressed decoration. Thomas Anbury served with the royal army during the early years of the American Revolutionary War and was captured and made prisoner at Saratoga by the colonial forces. Upon giving his parole, he travelled throughout the colonies, an interested but not especially objective observer (He thought slavery a curse). These two volumes, comprising eighty letters to ‘a friend’, record his impressions of what was soon to become the United States. Anbury first writes in August, 1776, from Cork, Ireland, where an expeditionary force is about to embark for North America, later from Montreal where British units have been gathered for a march down the Champlain valley into New York. There are letters, then, from various places along… Read more

London: Otto, 1904. Eleven issues (missing June). Large quarto (28 cm), pictorial wraps.  Each issue amounts to perhaps 200 pp. of text and pictures on quality coated paper, and the contents typically consisted of nine or ten articles by experts and a half dozen full-page plates, some in colour, with at least one suitable for framing.  The March issue, for example, carries articles on jewelled waxes, the Toby jug, Irish hall marks, Thackeray as artist, the armour of Schloss Ambras, the Academy Winter Exhibition, Chippendale’s contemporaries, the English potters and Napoleon; plates include the Arnolfinis by Jan van Eyck, the Cavendish sisters by Russell, Miss Farren by Thos. Lawrence, and a portrait of an old lady by Rembrandt. The covers’ yapp edges are subject to flaking where they overlap the text block, and sometimes the fairly heavy coated paper of the text breaks free from the soft covers. Each issue, however, is complete despite some tatters and the contents, including many intext… Read more

Description:

Anvers [Antwerp]: Guillaume Sylvius, 1577. First edition (pp. [73], [82]). Quarto (19 cm), early nineteenth century full calf, five raised bands, fancy gilt titles and decorations to spine and edges. An early document associated with the wars for Dutch independence and the founding of the Dutch republic, describes those events arising out of the repression of Dutch protestants by the appointed agents of Philip II, the Hapsburg King of Spain.  The first section of the book is an account of the various repressive measures undertaken by the king and his agents; the second comprises a number of letters (the originals in Spanish with French translations) to and from John of Austria implicating him in such activities. In 1576, following the death of Requesens, his governor-general for the Netherlands (which included Belgium, Luxembourg, and a piece of northern France), Philip selected his half-brother John of Austria to regain control of the region and put down once and for all the rebellious Dutch… Read more

London: Printed by William Lane for William Miller, 1802. First edition, in two volumes (pp. vi, 379; iv, 357). Octavo (20 cm) in contemporary full calf, gilt decoration and titles, speckled edges, marbled epps. ‘An entertaining periodical’, a weekly, whose first number appeared 26 September 1799 and whose sixtieth, and final number 18 December 1800 (Lowndes, Bibliographer’s Manual). The complete sixty numbers collected here comprise a mixture of literary essays and short fiction with a scattering of verse meant for the drawing room or shady summer garden. The reviewer in The Monthly Magazine (Vol. XIV, 1803) rides a metaphor about as far as one will go, saying, ‘Mr. Saunter has set before his guests a great variety of dishes, sweet, savoury, and simple: many of them are extremely well cooked, and served up with considerable taste: besides these... Mr. Saunter has accommodated some old English appetites, with a few solid joints of great excellence- plain, roast, and boiled.’ Titles faded… Read more

Description:
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1959. First edition (338, index). SIGNED by Astaire on the title page (‘To Margaret / Fred Astaire’). Octavo, in pictorial dust wrapper, black publisher’s cloth with impressed decoration, silver gilt titles to spine. Twenty-four pages of pictures from Astaire’s long career in dance. Price-clipped, dust wrapper lightly nibbled at corners, top of spine; edges a bit discoloured. Small dimple at bottom of p. 4 carries back onto preceding few pages as a crease (Generally, a very acceptable copy) . Considering Astaire, the most important male dancer of the 20th century, lived and for the most part worked for almost another thirty years, this autobiography might be considered an informal report on a work in progress. Scarce and desirable.
