Alongside daily expenditures is the detailed description of land leases, car and truck purchases, family deaths, and divorce. Other odd events recorded - major news accounts including convicted prisoners sentences and their crimes, a two page list of movie actors (male & female) from 1932, Movie titles of 1932-33, famous and non-famous deaths and where they were buried - all in all a curious look into a "normal" household in semi-rural Connecticut. Book is fully used, about 3/4 of the pages used. Handwritten in ink, pencil, and colored pen. Boards heavily soiled.

Hinds' Honey and Almond Cream was formulated in the late 1870's by Aurelius Stone Hinds in Portland Maine while working in a drugstore - it was a huge success and was bought out in 1907 by Lehn & Fink, makers of Lysol. Pamphlet concentrates on the new outdoor activities women were participating in. Illustrated throughout. Clean, crisp copy. Covers lightly soiled.

Turn of the century photo of young women posing with "Indian" swinging clubs dressed in "sailor" style uniforms. Club swinging tradition began with the Persian Pahlavani tradition and spread throughout the Persian empire to adjacent countries. Picked up by the English stationed in India, it was mistakenly called "Indian Clubs" and redesigned into smaller versions where it became integrated into the system of physical education. Club swinging was introduced to America in the mid -1800's and was even an Olympic sport in 1904. Photography studio listed on cardboard frame: T. Adamowicz, Milwaukee Ave., Chicago. Includes engraved frontispiece titled "intérieur d'une cuisine bien ordonnée" and 3 plates depicting ovens and cooking utensils. Albert was former chef de cuisine for Cardinal Fesch, Napoléon's Uncle. L'art de Conserver: Appert's signature on verso of title page. One folding plate. Appert, a confectioner, chef, and distiller, developed the first method of preserving food by enclosing it in airtight, sealed containers. (Pasteur later admitted his pasteurization process was largely derived from Appert's earlier methods.) Large folding trade catalog featuring a necessity for American farmers, especially small farms that serviced the local community with milk, cream, and all milk products. The producer uses illustrations and text to highlight this well crafted machine. This pamphlet was produced for M.V. Moran, Orlando, W. Va. Clean and crisp copy - 2 cm. tear to one fold, otherwise solid.

This scaled-down cocktail manual features the classics along with a page advertising the use of Bellows' Falernum; a sugar substitute, most likely created in the Barbados - key ingredients - lime zest, cloves, ginger, and almond extract.

A promotional treatise advocating a remedy for "the forms of Indigestion and Consumption in all their varieties, resulting from secret inadvertency in youth, or from sensual excesses." Readers were advised to send a urine sample for analysis and diagnosis. An early reprint of this promotional book; 1863 edition came a year earlier. Named after the "Prince of Surgery," Sir Astley Cooper who performed the first successful operation on the common carotid artery for aneurysm in 1808. Spine and board edges sunned and faded, front internal hinge split but holding.

San Francisco: Jaffe & Co. , c. 1915. Staplebound. Color illustrated wraps. Very good. 12 pages. An unusual trade catalog with a glimpse at the contrasting liquor laws at the turn of the century. Jaffe & Co. were originally located in Washington State but the liquor laws kept changing until the State Prohibition shut down their Seattle operation in 1915. The company moved to San Francisco and ran a retail and mail-order business from there until the enactment of the national Prohibition laws. The pamphlet highlights the move from Seattle to San Francisco with instructions on HOW WE DO BUSINESS & PERMIT's FOR WASHINGTON. It seems you were permitted to receive 2 quarts of liquor or 16 large bottles or 32 small bottles of beer every twenty days as a Washington resident and fairly similar laws for Oregon residents.
