Edinburgh: T. Cadell, 1775. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo. 5.25 x 8.5 in. xxxii, [1 errata], 472, [1 blank] pp. Illustrated with 3 fold-out copperplate engravings (complete). Contains 6 essays: on enclosures and fences, draining bogs and swampy ground, the method of levelling high ridges, the method of sowing grass-seeds, hay-making, and "miscellaneous disquisitions, doubts and queries relating to agriculture". Contemporary full calf, neatly rebacked with new title label to style. Attractive bookplate to front pastedown. Binding square and tight, text crisp and unmarked. Written by agriculturalist, economist and prominent Scottish enlightenment figure James Anderson (1739-1808). A nice copy.

York, Penn: P. Hardt, 1819. First Edition (?). Hardcover. Good. Small octavo, 91pp. A good copy only in the original boards with brown sheep spine, which is also certainly original. Boards show wear at the extremities, and there is a small piece missing at the base of the spine. While all the signatures are holding, some are a bit loosened. Paper evenly age-toned. A decent, unmarked copy that has never seen restoration. Contemporary owner's name (Joseph Mast / Metz?) on a front blank leaf. A manual for drafting legal documents of the kind one regularly encounters in collections of early 19th century Americana. Shaw/Early American Imprints 49395.

Baltimore: William Wooddy, 1841. First Edition. Hardcover. Good +. Octavo, 15pp. A good or better copy in a somewhat unusual contemporary binding; textured floral-patterned blue cloth over thin boards. Ghost of an old label on the front board, worn at the spine ends. Some foxing to endleaves, though the vast majority of the contents are clean and bright. Contemporary gift inscription on the front free endpaper. A scarce volume which summarizes the tenets of the Society of Friends, better known as the Quakers. The gift inscription, from a grandfather to his grandson, seems to confirm that the audience for this volume was young men who were preparing for adulthood in the church. London: T. Nelson & Sons, 1872. Later printing. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo, 108pp., illustrated, plus advertisements. A very good copy, clean and bright, in the publisher's decorative blue cloth with applied front board illustration. Some rubbing to extremities, one small gathering of pages loosened, but not detached, and a contemporary gift inscription on the front free endpaper. Clean and bright internally. A pleasing example.

St. Petersburg, Russia: A. Ouyne [?], 1885. Very good. One carte de visite, measuring about 2 1/2" x 4 1/8" (65mm x 105mm). A ca. 1885 carte de visite depicting a Russian circus or sideshow performer, who was missing an eye. In this image, the subject is using some sort of ball-shaped toy attached to a string, which he has placed in his eye socket. The image, slighly overexposed, is in very good condition with perhaps three mild foxing marks. The mound is evenly age-toned, but generally clean. The reverse prints the photographer's name and business information in Russian (we have not attempted to transliterate or translate the image, though our rudimentary skills can at least make out "St. Petersburg" and the slighty more specific neighborhood of "Krasnoye Selo." Certainly a scarce sideshow CDV.

Montreal: [no publisher given - Diocese of Montreal?], 1875. Hardcover. Fair - good. 16mo, 648pp. A fair to good copy in contemporary red cloth, with the backstrip replaced with old buckram. Page block split in the middle, with just a couple loose pages, but all present (apart from rear free endpaper). Contents generally clean. Much-faded contemporary inscription on the front free endpaper. A scarce English language edition of this devotional volume by a Catholic priest in Montreal. OCLC notes just a handful pf physical holdings, mostly in Quebec.

[Cleveland?], 1949. Sewn binding. Very good. Large quarto gathering of artwork and tissue guards with ink inscriptions, bound with a green ribbon. Dimensions approx. 10.75" x 13.5". [7]pp. altogether, recots only. In very good condtion, with all corners somewhat rounded and with shallow creases. There is a three-inch tear to the last leaf, which does not approach the image. Contents lovely. Beautifully made group of three amateur drawings, along with three leaves of holograph verse, plus title page. Two of the drawings (one of which is made to look like the cover of Vogue magazine) appear to be depictions of the subject of the author's admiration. One of the poems reads, "Whenever the time/Wherever the place/I put other mens' visions/of you to disgrace/For in my lovelit eyes/--you see/You'll always be a/Ziegfield girl to me." Third printing of this 1974 revised edition of Aaron's baseball memoir, first published in 1968, during the middle of his career. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in the publisher's red boards, with a rouch of rubbing to the corners. Ina fine price-clipped dust jacket. An appealing association copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Aaron on the front free endpaper to decades-long Atlanta Braves team doctor John Cantwell: "Best wishes to Dr. Cantwell, Hank Aaron." Cantwell's bookplate is neatly tipped onto the same page just below the inscription. Aaron spent most of his post-playing career as a Senior Vice President of the Atlanta Braves organization (in addition to his many other pursuits).

New York: E. P. Dutton, 1982. Later printing. Softcover. Very good. Octavo, 242pp. A very good copy, evidently read, with mild curling to wraps, spine gently cocked, but clean and sound. This copy SIGNED by Abbey (as "Ed Abbey") on the half-title. Uncommon thus. Abbey, a modern Thoreau-like figure, was best known for his anarchist/environmentalist novel "The Monkey Wrench Gang." In this volume of contemplative and philosophical nonfiction, Abbey explores his personal and intellectual journey.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 299pp. Ex-library with some of the usual markings (fewer than usual). Still a remarkably clean copy in the publisher's brown cloth, with bright gilt, and internally clean and bright. Truly a very good example of this uncommon legal text.

Keswick, UK: G. P. Abraham, 1928. Sewn binding. Near fine. Octavo, 56pp., illustrated. A very near fine copy, crisp, bright, and clean, in the publisher's brown sewn wraps with yapped edges. Edges thus a bit creased, but a stunningly clean copy internally. A lovely, and surprisingly affordable souvenir volume of the English poets associated with the Lake District, with some lovely illustrations.

Andover, Massachusetts: [Philips Academy], 1954. First Edition. Comb binding. Near fine. Oblong small quarto comb-bound album, 26pp. of photographs (with one image per leaf). Each photograph measures about 5" x 7". Photographs and album in excellent condition, overall near fine. A neat, whimsical 1954 memento album for the school band of Philips Academy (aka "Andover"). We were able to locate the yearbook from this period, which reproduces a few of the images seen here, so we imagine that several copies of this album were produced. The images depict members of the marching band at football games, in rehearsal, in interior performances, and a few "at ease." A charming snapshot of extracurricular life at Andover in the 1950s. We did not locate any other copies in libraries or offered in the trade, but presume one or two must be extant.

West Point, New York: United States Military Academy, 1897. Softcover. Near fine. 12mo, 39pp. A near fine copy in the original perfect-bound pale green wraps, with gentle rippling near the spine. Tight and bright internally.

New York: McDowell, Obolensky, 1959. First American Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Octavo, 215pp. A crisp, clean copy in the publisher's grey cloth (the second issue binding; sometimes called the second printing), near fine, with very gentle rounding to the corners. In a very good example of the fragile dust jacket, with a number of small chips at the extremities and attendant creases, but the spine almost entirely unfaded; genuinely scarce thus. Jacket is also the second issue, with $3.95 flap price and five blurbs on the rear panel. A very important debut novel by the Nigerian writer; one of the first post-colonial African novels to be widely read and engaged with by a Western audience. Despite its flaws, an attractive copy with appealing shelf presence.

Octavo, 124pp. A very good copy in like dust jacket, with a faint mustiness, and some gentle soiling to the endpapers and verso of the dust jacket. Bookseller ticket on the front free endpaper. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Acheson on the front free endpaper: "To Frank Pace with much affection from a fellow worker in the same jungle. Dean Acheson." Given the context, this is certainly Frank Pace, the Secretary of the Army under Harry Truman, who served in that position while Acheson was Secretary of State. A most appealing association.

About very good in the publisher's two-tone pale green cloth, with gentle bumps to the corners and some isolated foxing to the top edge. In a very good dust jacket with some rubbing and shallow tears and chips. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Acheson on the front free endpaper to Douglas Fairbanks, Jr: "To Douglas Fairbanks with the affectionate regard and best wishes of his friend, Dean Acheson, February 1966." Fairbanks' bookplate is tipped onto the front paste-down.

[xii] + 304 pp. Attractive book plate on the front pastedown, near fine in original green cloth decorated in gilt on the upper cover and lettered in gilt on the spine and in a very good, mildly chipped dust jacket. A nice copy of the uncommon American edition of this delightful travel account in the scarce dust jacket. Praise from David Garnett, J.B. Priestly, Carl Van Vechten, and Evelyn Waugh adorn the rear panel of the jacket.

New York: ERA Publications, 1924. First Edition. Hardcover. Good +. 12mo, 87pp. Ex-library with the usual markings. Mild edgewear, and apart from library markings, an otherwise clean copy internally; good or better. A scarce little hagiography of this American businessman and the author of the Dawes Plan, which organized the procedures by which the German government would pay their large reparations bill as stipulated in their surrender after World War I. The year after publication, Dawes would be sworn in as Vice President under Calvin Coolidge. We couldn't trace this volume at auction, and note a few dozen copies in libraries, per OCLC.

[New York]: [Committee for Nonviolent Action], 1967. Very good +. One trifold pamphlet, about 11" x 8.5" when unfolded. Text double-sided. A few faint creases, and a bit age-toned, as it was printed on inexpensive paper. Still, overall very good or better. A mildly left-wing pamphlet aimed at an enlightened middle American audience, imploring them to learn more about the Vietcong and to ask more questions about what the US is doing fighting there. Quite scarce, as we found just one copy in OCLC at the time of listing.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1948. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Small quarto, 132pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in the publisher's beige cloth, with a small smudge to the fore-edge and a small nick to the cloth at the top of the rear board. In a very good dust jacket with some short tears and creases, most notably at the spine ends, some of which were repaired with tape on the verso. Spine panel entirely unfaded. This copy SIGNED by Adams on the half-title page: "Ansel Adams Yosemite 12-15-79." This title is much scarcer signed than some of Adams' late-career books on the same subject.
