1693 ENGLISH 1ed Reformed Gentleman Church England Anglican Minster Guide RARE

Written at the end of the 17th-century by the Church of England, "The Reformed Gentleman" was the church's survey of
"degeneracy of the present age" following "the guilt of [England] in general aggravated in that neither God's Mercies can win it, nor his judgments terrify it into a serious reformation". (Introduction)
The anonymous author, known only as "A.M." discusses the prevalence of swearing and cursing, drunkenness, uncleanliness and sexual perversion, and breaking the Sabbath. It also offers advice to ministers on how to properly handle these issues within the church.

1611 Aelian On Animals Greek Philosophy FISH Animalia Mythology Wonders RARE

Claudius Aelianus, or more commonly known as Aelian, was a 2nd-century AD Roman rhetorician and philosopher who was well-versed in both Greek and Latin linguistics. Aelian had only two well-known works – 'On Animalia' and 'Variae Historia.'.

'Nature of Animals' is a collection of short philosophical stories about animals and other facets of natural history each with moral lessons rather than just physical descriptions of the animals themselves. According to the Loeb Classical Library, 'Nature of Animals' is
"an appealing collection of facts and fables about the animal kingdom that invites the reader to ponder contrasts between human and animal behavior."

Aelian wrote much of this work based on the observations of other writers including Plutarch and Pliny the Elder. However, the most thorough sections of this work deal with fish and fishermen, which scholars believe to be because Aelian himself enjoyed fishing. In fact,… Read More

1599 Claudius Aelianus Varia Historia Greco-Roman History Greek Mythology Latin

Claudius Aelianus was a 2nd-century Roman orator known for his lessons in Greek and works that describe Greco-Roman lifestyle and worldviews. Only two of his works have survived, one being 'Varia Historia' – a collection of anecdotes, maxims, biographical sketches, and reports of natural wonders. Aelianus describes mythological heroes, living rulers and Caesars, Olympic athletes, religious beliefs, funeral customs, Greek art, fishing techniques, serpent and animal worship, styles of dress and costumes, and the lives of Greek and Roman playwrights.

'Varia Historia' is generally considered to be a 3rd-century work, even though the first edition was not printed until 1545. This 1599 Latin edition was published in Geneva by Jean de Stoer.

1931 Aesop Fables Illustrated by Arthur Rackham Esoteric Fairy Tales Chesterton

"A doubtful friend is worse than a certain enemy. Let a man be one thing or the other, and we then know how to meet him."
― Aesop, Aesop's Fables
Aesop's fables have been printed for centuries and include some of the most famous fables and tales of all time. This first edition features 13 color tipped-in plates of Arthur Rackham art, including the frontispiece. It also has several in-text illustrations in black and white. Many of these illustrations depict animals personifying human qualities in a satirical or humorous manner.
Rackham art is highly desirable and has been used in numerous literary works. However, the illustrations in this printing are particularly notable. According to Hudson,
"Arthur Rackham's primary intention was to amuse…he was often his own model; there are several self-caricatures to be detected in Aesop's Fables. He is the man who catches the flea, the pompous gentleman who scolds the drowning… Read More

Description:
1548 Rodolphus Agricola De Inventione Dialectica Dutch Humanism Rhetoric & Logic

Rudolph Agricola was a 15th-century Dutch humanist primarily remembered for his best book 'De Inventione Dialectica". Agricola spent much of his career in education, teaching various subjects and fields; however, his lessons were rooted in rhetoric and language dialect. This propelled him to write his book "On Dialectical Invention" which argued for the use for rhetoric and logic in all facets of education. According to Hamilton,
"The significance of De inventione dialectica for the history of argumentation is that it assimilated the art of dialectic to that of rhetoric. Agricola focused on the topics rather than the analytics of Aristotle and on Cicero."

This 1548 edition is exceedingly rare, especially in the Americas. Only one copy is found in any institution in the Western Hemisphere, per the USTC.
