Description:
Inscribed to fellow author James Baldwin "to Jimmy from Toni 11.10.82". Toni Morrison and James Baldwin met when she was an editor at Random House, and she tremendously valued his work and his friendship. Morrison's eulogy for Baldwin at his funeral in December 1987 was printed in The New York Times. Author Jack Abbott spent much of his juvenile and adult life incarcerated. Due in part to the publishing of In The Belly of the Beast and the support of Norman Mailer, Abbott was paroled in 1981. However he killed a man six weeks later and returned to prison. Sixth Printing. 166 pages. 14.5 x 21.5 cm. Near fine book in very good dust jacket. This book's provenance is via the late San Francisco bookseller Burton Weiss who bought it from Baldwin's estate in St. Paul-de-Vence, France.

Description:
New York: Pantheon Books, 1993. Proof copy. Paperback, light blue wraps. Very slight wear on corners, otherwise in near fine condition. Laid in is a folded proof of the publisher's dust jacket, with black ink stamp in verso. Kathy Acker's thirteenth novel, My Mother: Demonology is an exploration of love, desire and power, that takes the character back to her childhood's memories and experiences. This experimental and boundary pushing novel, composed of fragments and references to cult and canonical works of literature and film, is a fantastic example of Kathy Acker's impulse to turn literary and aesthetic precepts inside out. An acclaimed novel by a countercultural icon.

Description:
Scotland: Published for The Author, 1807. First edition, Privately Printed in a run of 120 copies only. Folio. 27pp text, with 43 etchings (as called for) with tissue guards. Bound in contemporary full tree calf decorated and ruled in gilt with a large gilt central ellipse, by Scott of Edinburgh. Later restoration to the binding has involved strengthening of corners, extremities, and a full respine with the original spine laid on. The work was done a while ago, and was very professionally executed, leaving the binding strong, solid, and still remarkably handsome. Internally clean, with some gloriously wide margins, a set of ink initials (C.L.S.) to the front pastedown, and a large note pasted to the front flyleaf detailing the origins and provenance of the book:"This volume belonged to Frances, Lady Douglas, sister of the 2nd Duke of Buccleuch, and Wife of Archibald, 1st Lord Douglas (Son of 1st Marquess of Douglas), created Peer 1790, of Douglas House, Petersham. The C.L.S. opposite is Caroline Lucy… Read More

Description:
1920. Octavo loosely bound pamphlet home constructed of various colours of card. 26pp. Edges untrimmed. A rather charming and lopsided little construction of collage, manuscript, and drawings, most likely juvenile, utilising colour images trimmed from cigarette cards, postcards and other sources, including some clearly Japanese or Chinese pieces. 22 pages of mounted text on cream paper panels tipped on to the card stock, usually with a "main" illustration at the head of the panel, an ink manuscript description of features of the creature concerned, and a small ink drawing beneath. Mostly focussing on insects at the beginning (there's a particularly excellent Mantis), but also including other creatures like, Archer Fish, Flying Dragon lizards, and the humble Mole. A glorious and exuberant little homemade book. Delicate.

Description:
A wonderful combination of the classic Austen novel and Vera Willoughby's illustrations with their Art Deco and uniquely stylised elements. Her drawings, paintings and posters are held by the V&A, the British Museum and the London Transport Museum. In 1929 Willoughby was painting posters for London Underground, notably Spring and General Joy. Willoughby, a graduate of the Slade School of Art, also designed for the ballet with Cyril Beaumont under the pseudonym Vera Petrovna. Willoughby had an earlier romantic relationship with publishing house founder Peter Davies. As he was 27 years her junior this upset some of his friends, including J M Barrie. Althea Willoughby, Vera's daughter with her husband Louis, followed in her mother's footsteps and became an artist, book illustrator and poster designer for London Transport. Hardcover. 351 pages. Modern red morocco binding with gilt decoration to covers, 5 raised bands and title to spine. Minor spotting. First thus with 12 grey tone illustrations.
