Red cloth, gilt with gilt design to upper board, hinges weakening, head and foot of spine bumped, library plate and stamps to front pastedown and occasionally throughout, else good. The Cathedral Builders 'shows much original observation and research and, if its arguments are not always conclusive, the international scope of the work and its wealth of illustration render it a storehouse of information' (ODNB).

London: Ward, Lock & Tyler, (c.1868). 8vo, pp. [vi], 898, with 7 folding map and 99 full-page plates (wanting plates 22, 86-86 within numerical sequence), illustrated frontispiece, slight age browning, most plates browned and foxed, occasionally dusty, some light dampstaining to title and following couple of gatherings, first few leaves a bit frayed at margins. Modern buckram. 19th-century dedication to verso of frontispiece. A later edition of Beeton's popular geographical dictionary, with maps of the ancient, modern and biblical world, and wood-engraved illustrations. Contemporary advertisements boasted of 'several hundred engravings', but it is unlikely they were all ever bound in. That there were variations is proved by plate 14 in this copy, repeated twice but with a different image.

Text of the entire Gutenberg Bible printed lithographically, the illumination reproduced through sheet-fed gravure. Hand-bound crushed crimson morocco, Gutenberg's initials tooled in blind within large lozenge on both upper covers, spine gilt-lettered, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, An outstanding, fresh and clean copy of this sumptuous masterpiece of lithography - the first American facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible of 1455. The text is based on the first facsimile ever produced, that of Insel Verlag, 1913-14. The Insel facsimile was produced from two of the most attractive copies, preserved at the Berlin Koniglichen Bibliothek and the Standischen Landesbibliothek in Fulda. This explains the occasional interpolation of leaves with a different (though always German) decorative style, which adds to the charm of the work as it provides different examples of contemporary illumination. Third edition - under a new, very important title - of this English dictionary first published in 1847 as 'A Popular and Complete English Dictionary'. The preface of this new edition, which had the adjective 'imperial' added to the title, celebrated the English language as one 'spoken in every latitude of the globe; it is displacing every older tongue found prevailing in those countries where it has taken root; in a few years it will be the native tongue of more people than the whole of Europe will contain'.
