Publisher's green cloth, gilt lettered to the spine, later pencilled ownership inscription to the front pastedown. Frontispiece showing Babbage's Difference Engine no. 1. Neatly rebacked preserving all but the top of the original spine, occasional light foxing, very good. Babbage in his preface wrote: "This volume does not aspire to the name of an autobiography". Showing obvious pride in his pioneering work he wished to put on record the "remarkable circumstances" surrounding the creation of his Difference Engines, though the author worried whether this would be too dry to appeal to a wide audience and thus he wrote this "rambling, colourful, anecdotal" account of his life and times (ODNB). Contemporary inscription to front blank, marbled endpapers and edges. Contemporary black full calf, covers with double gilt rules to edges and a diamond pattern of blind rules, mild rubbing to the spine, metal clasp to the fore edge. First published 1843.

(xx), 422 pp. Contemporary prize binding from Tottenham Grammar School by Relfe Bros., wine red full calf, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered label, the college crest in gilt to the upper board and their prize bookplate to the front pastedown, endpapers and all edges marbled. Slight bowing to the boards, a little light rubbing, some foxing to the front leaves, else very good.

Folding colour printed map in two parts each measuring 48 x 123 cm, i.e. 96 x 123 if joined, both sides backed onto linen and folding between publisher's purple cloth boards, gilt lettered to the upper cover. Originally published by the firm Frank S. Richardson, also of Manchester.

A large folding colour printed chart of the world, decorated with 46 flags across the upper edge, six tables of data to the lower edge, a larger inset map of the British Isles plus 18 inset charts, mostly of ports, a pair of inset polar hemisphere maps to the upper corners and two other inset charts, the whole dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen, folds between the original gilt lettered maroon cloth covers, marbled paper to inner cover and folded end section on linen verso. The covers worn but sound, barring small slits to the edges of one or two linen folds the map itself is very good. The charts are of San Francisco, Auckland, Adelaide, Hong Kong, Hamburg Wellington, Bombay, Tokyo, Calcutta, the Suez Canal, Sydney, Melbourne, Cape Town, New York, Singapore, Buenos Aires, Gibraltar and the Panama Canal. Frontispiece illustrating the "flags of all nations", 6 full page maps including individual maps of the north and south polar regions with surrounding universal time charts and 26 double page maps, all in colour. Slight colour bleed onto the endpapers, else very good. The collation includes a general map of Oceania, a general map of Australia and 6 state maps plus a general map of New Zealand plus individual maps of the north and south islands. Although the atlas bears Bacon's London imprint it remains notably scarce outside of Australia. OCLC records one copy of this second edition in the US plus five in Australian institutions. Only three copies of the 1909 edition and a single copy dated 1911 are listed, all in Australia.

Contemporary full calf, rebacked to style with raised bands, gilt rules to the compartments, elaborate ownership inscription by a Samuel Thomas of St. James's, Bristol to one of the versos of the title page dated 1767. Engraved title, dedication, 4 general maps and 42 county maps plus 7 tables. Marginal loss to one side of the title page, a number of the maps and tables with more minor splits at the centrefolds, mostly with subtle tissue repairs on the verso, the maps of Essex, Lincolnshire and Somerset with neat but more apparent repairs, very good overall. Chubb, CLXXIV. One of a number of issues of the first edition of the atlas published in this year, often with slightly different imprints. This example benefits from being one of the issues with the two added tables at the rear providing rates for "Hackney Coaches" and "Hackney Chairmen". The second edition appeared in 1745.
