Collation: Vol. 1 - vi, 127 + 15 folding engraved plates; Vol 2- viii, 151 + 14 (12 folding) engraved plates. Plate 13 is duplicated. There are 3 leaves preceding the second part that are misplaced and should be at the front of the first section after the title page. This rebound copy has original marble boards and later vellum. The title page is reduced along the fore edge by 1.1 cm not affecting printed area. Text and plates in very good condition with only occasional minor spotting and dusting. This is a complete copy despite the misplaced pages during rebinding. This first edition of Barrow's lectures on geometry and optics were given at Cambridge where he was Lucasian professor of mathematics. This is a rare collection of original fascicles dated 1843. Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Berge was a noted German naturalist, ornithologist and entomologist who had written and illustrated exceptiona works on beetles, butterflies and birds. The present copy of Berge s treatise on beetles is a fine and scarce collection of European beetles with 1315 hand colored specimens on 34 plates. (Hagen p. 43; Nissen ZBI 321)

Bigelow had great concern for the suffering of surgical patients and was interested in finding an ideal agent, which could be used as an anaesthetic. Ether had the potential to be of use though there was concern over its flammability. The plates are quite elegant and the coloring adds to their beauty and makes this a wonderful book describing the plants of Italy, Sicily, France… Boccone was an Italian naturalist who traveled extensively and collected plants in different countries.
