Description:
This is Bellow's second novel, first printing of the British edition. Likely to have been a short run printing since Bellow was not well known then, and post WWII austerity resulted in tight publishers budgets. It is therefore scarce in collectable condition. This copy, the best we have handled, sports the original dust jacket with no obvious tears, sunning, or marks. The only flaws are 1) a fold tear at the front jacket flap; 2) small holes in the edge of the rear jacket fold. Will happily provide photos are these flaws. Both flaws are only noticeable on close examination. The book itself is exceptionally clean, tight and square. The top edge is slightly dusty and half title page has a few faint fox spots. Overall, nr fine in a nr fine jacket. For a book issued in 1948 this is rare indeed.

Description:
The binding is original as are the yellow endpapers and the most attractive folding colour chart. The book was a significant piece of propaganda to propose social reform allied to ethics in the war against poverty in England. The Sally Army had a major effect on the reforms that were introduced in the early 20th Century under the Liberal administration such as pensions. The book also gave significant support the the growth of charities that looked after the poor and destitute.

This copy is square and tight, with edge wear at the tips. The last two pages of adverts for the Army's publications are loose. No inscriptions except in pencil and an attractive bookplate and in print on the front free end parer - "For the pps of "The Cross". ".

Description:
This is the first signed limited of one of Stephen Booth novels. They are set in the Peak District. The series characters are well constructed: PC Ben Cooper is trying to get over his father's death and his mother's mental illness. The book is really a good novel of the English landscape combined with a fascinating mystery and detective work.

This book is from stock as is new. Only 85 signed and numbered copies with a beautiful appreciation by the late Reginald Hill.

Description:
Thomas Burke's escapist mystery stories are a significant aspect of underground and criminal London literature. Perhaps the very opposite of the Golden Age genteel society murder mystery. The stories are from the classic "Limehouse Nights" whose stories feature Chinaman and muscular sensual narratives set in London's docklands with violence, and robbery not far away.
This is a first edition in good order for its age - now over 100 years old. The pages are yellowed with age, but all are present. The binding is still good and the design of the covers are bright. They protected by the jacket - still quite colourful. It is nicked at the top and bottom of the spine but still intact. Uncommon in this condition.
