A complete copy with the full page engraved portrait of Baxter together with the engraved title page and four sectional title pages. Original boards, finely re-backed over raised bands, label.Richard Baxter was a leading Nonconformist minister of the English C17th who, after the Restoration refused preferment and spent time in prison for his beliefs. He was known during his time and since as a pastoral shepherd of his flock in his local parish of Kidderminster, Worcestershire.

[18],607, [5]pp. Typographic title present but lacks the engraved frontis and engraved title pages, otherwise complete. Mainly good to very good, with some marks. Mmm3 with small textual loss cutting into lower 5 lines. Final 20 or so pages are browned. Full original C17th lether boards recently rebacked over raised bands and attractive period style label.

[16], 23, [1], 328, 339-384pp collates complete despite the hiatus in pagination at 328. There is a part title, dated but register and pagination are continuous. Text pages are very good, crisp with wide margins, occasional marks. Original C17th leather boards rebacked in style over raised bands with hand-lettered label. A very good, near fine copy.

William Mavor Watts (1797/98 - 1874) was an English printer, based in London, who specialised in non-Roman fonts and Bible printing. Watts took over the printing business that his father Richard Watts had established in Crown Court, Temple Bar, London and developed it further. Watts made his name well known as a printer who could undertake to set up copy in almost every language and turn out his works in thoroughly artistic style. The founts of type he possessed, available for the printing of works in almost every known language, would have done honour to the wealthiest and most learned academies.

A fascinating association copy of a New Testament found by a soldier in the first World War and recovered from a library destroyed by the war and rain. The inscription reads: "Souvenir of the World War. At the back of the N.Z Trevelus is the Church of , lately destroyed by German artillery. The splendid Rectory is still standing but is in ruins. The abbe's library is now falling through the flooring to the basement below. I took this from the shelves haphazard. A few weeks of rain, together with another peppering from the Hun batteries will see the end of what must have been a beautiful library. Today, the parish itself stands forsaken and deserted; it's empty streets overgrown with rank (?) grass and the noble church that once was, an unrecognisable brick heap. I saw it destroyed. A bifolium from a gargantuan Atlantic Bible, each leaf 510mm x 355mm., with Tobit 11:8-Judith 8:26, double column, 40 lines in brown ink in a professional rounded Romanesque bookhand, simple initials and running titles in red, some holes with significant losses to one column of first leaf, Italy, mid-twelfth century. c.1320. 45cm x 30cm. Single large leaf, with the main text set in a small, square text block of 2 columns of 15 lines. Tall square Italian bookhand in the centre of the leaf (with parts of Lib.1 tit VI. 'De electione'). Wide margins with 67 lines of the standard commentary enclosing the main text. Capitals touched in yellow, paragraph marks in red and blue, running titles in red and blue with other contemporary roman numeral section numbers in contemporary pen. One text correction. Old water damage. Modern folio no. '23' on recto. Spotting to outer upper corner but overall in good condition. A very large and handsome leaf from a copy of the 'Sextus Liber Decretalium'.

Vol.1, but a second volume was never published. [68], 412pp Library plate to inside paste-down. Very good. Bray was well-known for establishing parish libraries in both UK and the colonies. His proposals are elaborated in this book and his activities sustained through the SPCK. The importance of this book should not be under-estimated in the history of the library (see Godly Reading by Cambers (pp 144-145)

[22], 172,177--577,[1]pp. Lacks Q3,4. Contemporary full calf with some loss at foot of spine, rubbed, raised bands, label. Notwithstanding the loss of 2 leaves, this work is very uncommon in commerce with no apparent auction records. It is only represented in 3 US Libraries. This work was planned as a multi-volume work but, in the end, only volume 1, book 1 was published. Bunny was best known for his 'Scepter of Judah'.
