The apparently unrecorded, presumed first edition of a comprehensive catalogue of the extensive holdings of the Great Western Railway Mechanics Institution, Swindon. The Locomotive Magazine (5th November, 1917, p.238), in reviewing the edition issued in 1917, stated: 'The entries under subject headings are complete, descriptive notes being added to show the scope character of the books, particularly in regard to those with engineering and railway work. The librarian Mr. Hildon Bagguley F.L.A., who has had large experience municipal libraries, has reorganized the Institution on public library lines, and anyone whether in the employ of G.W.R. or not, who has been elected and paid the subscription, may enjoy all the privileges of the Institute.' . An apparently unrecorded mid-nineteenth-century broadside advertising wine coolers 'so contrived that the Cold is chiefly applied to the upper part of the bottle, thereby ensuring the greatest effect of the frigorific mixture with the least expenditure of material, and at the smallest cost'. The coolers, and associated 'ice powders', could be had at the Edinburgh premises of pharmaceutical chemist Henry Craven Baildon (d. 1881), father of poet Henry Bellyse Baildon (1849-1907), today predominantly remembered for his lifelong friendship with Robert Louis Stevenson (1850- 1894). . Lightly rubbed, paper shelf-label to foot of spine. Scattered spotting. A reprint of the earliest life of Bishop of Rochester, cardinal, and martyr John Fisher (c. 1469-1535). First published in 1655, the book was issued under the name of Roman Catholic controversialist Thomas Bayly (d. c. 1657), who was not in fact the author. The work was for some time commonly attributed to Roman Catholic priest Richard Hall (c. 1537-1604) however, it is now thought that Hall's effort was merely a translation of an anonymous text. Regardless, Bayly acquired Hall's manuscript, made a copy, and had it published by an unidentified bookseller with a preface implying that it was his own work. ESTC T138969.. 12mo.

Leaves foxed throughout. An unrecorded Naples edition of Charles-Francois Bailly de Merlieux's (1800-1862) treatise on elements of the physical sciences. Having achieved popularity within the original French, running through several editions following its initial 1825 publication, this Italian translation appeared, printed in the same year as a Turin edition, near double in length. . 8vo.
