Sweden, ME: Ives Street Press, 1991. Cash, Barbara. 16mo. (19)pp. One of 100 copies. Signed the printer and artist, Barbara Cash, at the colophon, and this copy with a signed holiday note from her laid in. Very first leaf sports a delicate array of pressed flowers, set within a double-rule border printed in pink. Bacon's essay, set in Monotype Walbaum, famously outlays his ideal garden design, inclusive of hedges, paths, and fountains, and wishy-washy on aviaries and statuary. Bound in turquoise wrappers with exposed bands of the same paper. Fine, housed in purple clamshell box. Prospectus laid in.

Description:
NY: Dial Press, 1963. Uncorrected long galley proof copy. Baldwin's seminal non-fiction text on race in America, here in a rare pre-publication format. The book contains two essays, "My Dungeon Shook: Letter to My Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Emancipation" and "Down at the Cross: Letter from a Region of My Mind." The first essay meditates on the position of Black men in American society, from its founding to Baldwin's present moment. Its tone is nurturing yet rife with anger and frustration. The second essay discusses the role of religion both on and in the Black community, with particular attention to the repression Christianity imposes on Black believers. Baldwin uses the Nation of Islam as an explanatory foil for Christianity. Baldwin's passionate and informative points, along with his ability to write lucidly and incisively, continue to resonate with the American public, both white and Black. Plastic comb binding at head of text, with thick card covers and paper label to upper…

Description:
Milan: Editrice Vecchi, 1950. Prudencia, A.. Octavo. (12)pp. Color illustrations throughout depict the story of Little Black Sambo, Helen Bannerman's popular folk tale. The narrative is told in Italian verse at the bottom of each page. The illustrations depart slightly from Bannerman's original depictions of the characters, though some still employ classically racist motifs, and the whole is a rather belittling vision of people of color. A shape-book, bound in brightly colored pictorial wrappers cut in the silhouette of Sambo, who carries a three-dimensional toy pan flute. This gimmick was the hallmark of Editrice Vecchi's "Piccolo Fiore" series. As new, including original printed glassine bag, as issued. A bright, sliver of midcentury Italian children's publishing.

Verona: Officina Bodoni, 1974. Tall octavo. (58)pp. One of 150 copies. Contains the English text, which was translated from the Latin by Betty Radice. Unlike the rare incunable from which this text is taken, which was printed in 1489 by Paulus Fridenperger, Mardersteig here makes use of several beautiful decorations which were the work of the 15th century scribe Felice Feliciano, including a rather striking initial "S". A fine copy in quarter vellum and blue Roma paper boards with woodcut pattern in white. T.e.g. Housed in publisher's slipcase. Typed letter in German from the Press laid in. (Mardersteig 190).

Description:
Sydney, Australia: Beacon Press, 1948. Folio. 53pp. One of forty deluxe copies, signed by the author. A lovely production, illustrated with thirty-six color plates. The plates are genuine prints: beautifully made modern reproductions of the originals, done in Japan. The text traces the rise and fall of the Ukiyo-ye school of Japanese wood-engraving, from its origins with the artist Moronobu in the seventeenth century, to its decline under Western influences in the nineteenth century. Ukiyo-e is translated as "pictures of the floating world," and prints of this genre depict the carefree pleasures of life: a world of entertainment and beauty, beyond mundane, everyday concerns. Ukiyo-ye challenged the traditional aristocratic and courtly schools of painting, and the plates depict people of the lower classes, including actors and courtesans, the finely-dressed beauties of the city, and tea-house waitresses. Artists of this school featured in Barnett's work include Utamaro, Shunsho, Harunobu, and…
