The author, one of the original owners of the original townsite of Portland, Oregon, was born on the Wabash near Mt. Carmel, Il. His long life coincides with the history and events of Oregon, especially that of eastern Oregon. There is also a good deal of material on California. Not in Howes, Soliday, Graff, Eberstadt, or Howes. Very scarce.

In addition to Banks's text there is a newly written illustrated commentary by Dr. Avril Lysaght. By chance the "Endeavor" had sailed into one of the most pleasant parts of that great southern land. For two weeks Banks and his party landed each day and roamed through the countryside, collecting orange flowers, plants and animals previously unknown to Europeans. His first encounters with boomerangs and kangaroos are somewhat amusing.

First edition. 71,[1]pp. Original blue wrapper, left corner of front cover missing, chips to spine, pencil notes on front cover and errata page.* Bartlett was one of the original participants in the conquest of California and the first major of San Francisco in 1846-47. An attack on his conduct during this period caused him to defend his case in this pamphlet. It was charged that he had been engaged in financial irregularities when acting as an agent for the Treasury when he was an officer in the African Squadron. When he withdrew his petition in 1847, he was restored to service by the U. S. Senate.
