The catalogue of a major retrospective which was overshadowed by the suicide of George Dyer who features in so many of the paintings in the exhibition.Presentation copy from Francis Bacon, inscribed on the inside front cover: ''To Jamie [sic] with all best wishes, Francis Bacon''. The recipient is the aristocratic Spanish interior designer Jaime Parladé whose wife Janetta was a painter and a friend of Bacon.One or two of the folding plates are creased at the fore-edge. Texts in French. With the four-page Chroniques supplement. The illustrations include five single sheet colour lithographs and one folding triptych colour lithograph. The front cover is also a colour lithograph.Presentation copy from the artist, inscribed inside the front cover: ''Jeanette [sic] with best love - Francis''. The recipient is Janetta Parladé, the Marquesa de Apezteguia, a designer, painter and Bloomsbury socialite. She had quite an eventful private life. Bacon was one of the visitors to her home in Southern Spain.Small stain to top of a few sheets, not affecting the images. Covers rubbed and creased at the edges. Very good.

The book was published as a means of raising funds for an old friend who was widowed with several daughters to support. Many leading writers of the day contributed unpublished pieces, including Sir Walter Scott, Crabbe, Wordsworth, Southey, et al. A cursory scan through the lengthy list of subscribers throws up many familiar names, including Lady Byron, George Crabbe, Sir Humphry Davy, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Sir Walter Scott (ten copies), James Watt, as well as numerous members of the aristocracy and royal family.From the library of socialite and literary hostess Harriet Baring (Baroness Ashburton) with her ownership signature on the second blank and her monogram bookplate on the front pastedown.Some light foxing here and there.
