Description:
New York: Putnam, 1981. Uncorrected Proof for Limited Distribution. Wraps. Near Fine. 457 p. 21cm. Light lavender colored wraps. Book Condition: Near fine; with light toning to spine, an almost invisible crease to upper corner of front panel and some smudge to lower edge of text block. Publisher's specs on front cover list page count of 464 though for this proof 457 pages is correct. Barthelme's collector cachet is low compared to his importance as a great American writer. Two theories why this might be so: 1) An entire generation of collectors who might otherwise have pursued his work had the bad luck of encountering "The Dead Father" (Barthelme's second novel) as their first exposure to the author's work and never recovered. 2) Universal ignorance of how to pronounce the author's surname throws wet blanket over any collecting interest.

It's the Nelsen Algren cat to be sure but this one is much bigger than usual and is in purple and yellow marker, a rarity. Barthelme was a very vocal admirer of Algren's work, as was just about every other writer of his (Barthelme's) generation. Why Algren signed this copy of Barthelme's 9th book, and with such gusto, we may never know... we do know however that it's a…
