Description:
New York: Published for the Author by C.T. Geslain, 1828. [3], [1 blank] pp. Music only, unaccompanied by words. Disbound. Lithograph portrait of Calhoun by Endicott. Some spotting, two repaired closed tears with cloth tape [no text loss]. Good+. This item dates from the early years of George Endicott's lithography firm. He began business in New York in 1828. From 1834 until 1841 he was partners with Moses Swett in the firm Endicott and Swett; in 1841 his brother William joined him. Until Calhoun became a committed Southern Rights advocate, he was a serious contender for the Presidency. His transformation from American Nationalist to Southern Sectionalist-- and his abandonment of any rational hope for the Presidency-- was illustrated most dramatically in his support for South Carolina's Nullification of the Tariffs of 1828 and 1832.

19th Cong., 2d Sess.: HR79., 1827. Washington: Gales & Seaton. 251, [1 blank] pp, 2 folding tables. An entirely unsophisticated copy, stitched, uncut and untrimmed as issued. Lightly tanned and foxed. Very Good. Calhoun served as Secretary of War under President Monroe for nearly seven years, beginning in 1817. Congress, worried by the Panic of 1819, disapproved his proposed budget to enhance coastal and frontier fortifications and military roads. Calhoun's rival in the Cabinet, Treasury Secretary William Crawford of Georgia, led the attack. Criticisms of Calhoun increased when reports issued that his favorite project, a military outpost on the Yellowstone River, was running way over budget; rumors suggesting that Calhoun and his associates had personally profited from certain projects soon proliferated. In 1827, with Vice President Calhoun enmeshed in conflicts with rivals for the upcoming presidential election, these charges resurfaced. Calhoun thus requested a full investigation, which… Read More

Description:
[California. 10pp, disbound, outer two leaves partly detached at top and bottom. Tanned, minor dustsoiling and wear of outer leaves. Good+. "From the organization of the State government of California, the city of San Francisco has contended that there was a pueblo, or town, under the Mexican Government, at the site of the present city, on the acquisition of the country, that such pueblo owned the land within the limits of 4 square leagues, to be measured otf from the northern portion of the peninsula upon which the city is situate: and that the city succeeded to this interest. The city, in 1852, presented her claim for the 4 square leagues to the board of land commissioners, created under the act of Congress of March 3, 1851, for the settlement of private land claims in California, and asked its confirmation. The United States contested this claim, denying the title of the city, but did not make any claim of reserves, nor of any right to make reserves." [41st Congress, 2nd Session, Senate Report No. 30.]. Description:
San Francisco: Placer Times and Transcript Office, 1854. 8pp, bound in attractive modern quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt spine lettering. Very Good. A significant chapter in the epic Gwin-Broderick struggle, which split the California Democratic Party on the Kansas-Nebraska issue and ended only with Broderick's death in a duel with Chief Justice David Terry of the California Supreme Court. At the time of this public meeting, Broderick was President of the California Senate and sought to engineer his own election to the U.S. Senate to replace Senator Gwin, whose term would expire on March 4, 1855. These California Democrats resist the attempt to steamroll Broderick's election, arguing that only "the Legislature next preceding a new senatorial term, has the right to elect." Discussing this item, Eberstadt says, "The 'public meeting' was held in the Senate Chamber at Benicia and the proceedings give a clear insight into local politics just prior to vigilante days." [np, 1762. Folio sheet, folded to 9-3/4" x 15." 3, [1 docket] pp. Old folds, with several separations expertly repaired without loss. Else Very Good, with caption title, as issued. A contemporary manuscript note in a blank margin recites English law that "no man shall be put out of his land... but by due process of law." This rare document is captioned, "To the King's most Excellent Majesty in Council, The Humble Petition of Francis Brerewood, of St. Martin's in the Fields in the County of Middlesex, Esq:" The Petition traces Francis Brerewood's entitlement to a 10,000 acre "Tract of Land called the Lord Baltimore's Gift, lying in the said Province of Maryland, in Baltimore County, on the North Side of the Main Falls of Gunpowder River." Title to the Land devolved by gift, will, and various leases and devises from Lord Baltimore to Lady Margaret, his wife, in 1713; by Lady Margaret's Will to her grand-daughter Charlotte Calvert, in 1731; and then from Charlotte, through marriage and various leases… Read More

Description:
[Middletown, PA?], 1852. Folio sheet, folded to 7-1/2" x 9-3/4". Written on the first page in ink manuscript. Docketed on final blank, "Gen. S. Cameron Jany. 6/9 1852, Ansd. Jany 9th"; addressed to "Col. R. Frazer, Lancaster, Pa." Folded for mailing, stamped "PAID 3" with faint circular postal cancel of Middletown and free frank "paid." Old wax seal and folds for mailing. Near Fine. Gen. Simon Cameron [1799-1889] of Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, was a Democrat and Know-Nothing before becoming a Republican in 1856. Noted for his corrupt dealings and as a political chameleon, he was a U.S. Senator from 1845-1849, 1857-1861, and 1867-1877; and Secretary of War from 1861-1862, when Lincoln exiled him to Moscow as Minister to Russia. Reah Frazer [1804-1856] was a well known attorney and prominent member of the Democratic Party in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His father, William C. Description:
[Harrisburg?, 1855. 48pp. Stitched in original printed blue title wrappers [spine-chipped]. Two stab holes in blank left margin. Light scattered foxing, old vertical fold, Very Good. This document, says Howes, was reprinted "to discredit" Cameron, a Pennsylvania kingmaking politician who stuffed his pockets with the spoils of a panoply of public offices. In 1838 President Van Buren made him an Indian Commissioner in charge of settling the Winnebago Indian land claims. The appointment ended in scandal when he used his own bank's notes as part of the adjustment. He became derisively known as "The Great Winnebago Chief." The front wrapper, quoting from the St. Louis Reporter, calls Cameron's activities "infamous speculation." Bibliographers-- generally recording only a 38-page pamphlet under this title-- conclude that this pamphlet was printed in 1839. That seems unlikely. Original House Document 229 was printed during the 25th Congress in 1839. This reprint was published to thwart Cameron's designs… Read More

Baltimore: John Murphy, 1846. Original printed wrappers, stitched [loosening]. 32pp, double columns. A bit of wrinkling and light wear. Old institutional rubberstamps. Good+. Campbell concedes that Kennedy is "a respectable lawyer," as well as "a polished writer, and an agreeable speaker." But Campbell hits him hard in this piece: "His endeavors to build facts upon merely conjectural history-- however spirited and original-- should not have been essayed in opposition to the records, without a more thorough acquaintance with his subject." Campbell's review, a defense of Lord Baltimore against Kennedy's perceived attack, is detailed and learned. "Far better had it been for the fame of Mr. Kennedy, had he never attempted to write the life of Lord Baltimore." FIRST EDITION. Sabin 37409n.
