San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, (1929). One of 300 numbered copies. Quarto. [8], 122, [2] pp. with hand-colored decorations by Valenti Angelo. Publisher's buff boards with spine lettering. Custom slipcase by William Wheeler. Aside from a bit of sunning to spine, a very fresh and clean copy in a like binding. Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca was a Spanish explorer of the New World, and one of four survivors of the 1527 Narvaez expedition. During eight years of traveling across the US Southwest, he became a trader and faith healer to various Native American tribes before reconnecting with Spanish colonial forces in Mexico in 1536. After returning to Spain in 1537, he wrote an account, first published in 1542 as La Relacion. Cabeza de Vaca has been considered notable as a proto-anthropologist for his detailed accounts of the many tribes of American Indians that he encountered.

Sheep Ranch: Charles Anderson, 1886. Original entrance/raffle ticket printed in thick pink stock and measuring 5 1/4 x 3 inches. Bit of wear at upper left corner but very good overall. The price of admission to this rural ball was a whopping 10 dollars but if one reads on we see that there were only 250 tickets issued and each ticket, aside from admission to the ball and supper, represents a share of the products listed on the verso of the ticket; 1. Two Horses, Harness and Buggy...$500. 2. "..".." $400....4. One Buckboard...$75. 5. One Spring Cart... $75...19. One Nay Pistol...$10...etc. How they divided the spoils is a mystery. Sheep Ranch has a surprisingly colorful history. The town was once surrounded by sheep corrals, and in 1860 gold ore was discovered in the corrals where the sheep were kept at night. Soon Sheepranch was a bustling gold mining town. Before the turn of the century there were five flourishing gold mines and one had a ten-stamp mill. The town also supported 15 saloons. The town was pa ... Read more

The remaining pages are smaller sketches of plants and animals. E. May Caldwell appears to have hailed from Boston and is a known artist (although there is not much data available). There is a newspaper report of her spending 2 days in San Pedro sketching the harbor in 1915.. She obviously made her home in San Diego.

[Sacramento]: Department of State, 1888. Broadside. Embossed gold paper Great Seal affixed at center, printed ribbon woven through. 11 3/4 x 18 inches. Brief history and description of the origin of the Great Seal of California, designed by Maj. R.S. Garnett. The ribbon has printed: "Compliments of L.H. Brown, Secretary of State." Brown served as Secretary of state from 1895 to 1899. Old remnants of tape at corner and some general toning but a very good copy. This document gives both a history of the Great Seal of California and an example of the Seal itself. As near as can be determined broadsides concerning the Great Seal were issued when there was a change in the Seal. This does not appear to be the case here as the text is merely a history of the designing of the Seal. There are only three copies located by OCLC (Fresno County, Bancroft and the Boston Athenaeum). The need for a Great Seal was discussed at the Constitutional Convention for the new state meeting in Monterey in 1849. In town was United St ... Read more

There is also a lengthy essay start on p. 101 entitled "What Is and What May Be: Prospective benefits likely to accrue in the near future.
