Priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Reprint of an earlier catalogue for a sale that was supposed to take place in 1808. Caillard (1737-1807) was a French diplomat and man of letters. His was an important library containing notable incunabula, classical texts, scientific and natural history works, and voyages in the finest possible condition and often printed on large paper. Also included are manuscripts and fine bindings. According to Graesse, this catalogue (2650 items described) is based upon an earlier printed inventory (Paris, Crapelet, 1805); the sale did not actually take place for another two years (1810, November 26 - January? 1811), at which time copies of the 1808 edition were reissued, with a new cancel titlepage dated 1810. A remarkable collection of books and manuscripts comprising local history, antiquarian studies, topography, etc. The Society of Antiquaries of London dates from 1572 and Archbishop Parker. It is the world's premier learned society in the field of heritage and possesses the major archeological research library in the United Kingdom.

Contemporary full calf binding, spine goldtooled. (top & bottom of spine & corners slightly rubbed). Edges stained red. Only edition and a nice clean copy of this important work which unfortunately lacks the two plates although seems they have never been bound into this particular copy. The colour circle or wheel is a common form adopted for colour systems. They have been used since the Middle Ages. Castel created a color wheel based on colour as a combination of light and shadow. He began with determining the colours in the rainbow. Newton's seven principal colors were not enough; Castel found at least a thousand; impossible to differentiate among them such a large number of colors in a circle of any practical size. Some patches of vellum missing on the spine not affecting the binding and corners slightly damaged. Edges stained red. William Cave (1637 - 1713) was an English divine whose fame rests upon his writings on church history which are voluminous and valuable. The present work, a history of ancient Christian literature, is his main work and the one for which he is best known.

1751. Holmiae, Typis Laurentii Salvii, anno 1751. (iv),210,(xiv)pp. Small 8vo. Later quarter black leather with black cloth-covered boards. (edges rubbed). First edition of this history of the Royal library in Stockholm. The history of this library goes back to the 16th century when King Gustav Vasa started collecting books. The Royal Collection formed the basis of what is now the National Library. Much of the library went up in flames during the great palace fire of 1697 when 17,286 bound volumes and 1,103 manuscripts were lost. Only 6,700 volumes and 283 manuscripts survived. Celsius (1716-1794), was a librarian and wrote other histories of important libraries. [Almquist 2629].

Hence they forbid the publication and sale of those bulls when not approved by the court beforehand. Only bulls etc. that are accompanied by a 'lettre de patent' of the king can be sold without punishment.

Fascinating detailed catalogue of French books, writings and works that have been suppressed, condemned or against which legal action has been taken from the 21st of October 1814 to the 31st of July 1877. The work starts with a detailed catalogue of the various works consulted followed by descriptions of various acts and legal actions banning various books and prints - of particular note is the section devoted to the SUPPRESSION OF OBSCENE AND SEDITIOUS PHOTOGRAPHS (PP. XXIX - XXXII) with a catalogue of particular examples.

1842. London, 1842. 105pp. 1514 items described. Original printed wrappers. (sl. dam.). George Chalmers (1742 – 31 May 1825) was a Scottish antiquarian and political writer. Impressive collection especially rich in Shakespeare (items 514 to 558). Item 558 is a copy of Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis published in Edinburgh by John Writtoun in 1627 which has an extensive note and is described as a unique copy. Apart from this work there are numerous other rare works like item 845 which is Pierce Plowman. Newes from the North, E. Allde, 1585 also with a description of nearly a page. A very interesting collection.

Priced throughout in red ink in a contemporary hand with a name in the same ink at the end "Le Guy"? (lower hinge of front cover a bit damaged corners & edges a bit rubbed, a few pieces of leather missing from spine. Wormhole in the lower margins of the first 8 pages, first flyleaf loosening, manuscript note (library number?) made with a felt pen on the title, owner name erased from title).Sale catalogue of the library formed by Louis-Basile de Béthune, Chevalier de Charost (1674-1742). He spent the most part of his life building his collection that is particularly strong in the field of French history. The catalogue contains 5103 lots. 1773. (London, 1773). 24pp. 12mo. Drop head title. Last page dustsoiled. Disbound & loose. John Cooke was a bookseller in London, who, according to Plomer, in partnership with J. Coote made a specialty of jestbooks and chronicles of crime, which he advertised extensively in provincial newspaper. The books in this catalogue all have very extensive notes on the contents etc. [c.f. Plomer, Dictionary of Printers and Booksellers].

Jacques Joseph Guillaume François Pierre, Comte de Corbière (1766 - 1853) was a French lawyer who became Minister of the Interior. He was intolerant of liberalism and a strong supporter of the church. He amassed an important collection of books that after his death were acquired by the Parisian bookseller Bachelin-Deflorenne who sold them by auction in 1869.

This is the first publication ( No.1) of the Publications of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society. In addition to the list of the original books in the St. Catherines Library and Chapel there are some notes on the English Authors to be found therein. The Laws of the Society are also included. along with the names of the president and council.
