Both are first edition paperbacks. 1. Rex Whistler's War 1939-July 1944, Artist into Tank Commander by Jeremy Spencer-Smith. Published by the National Army Museum in 1994, this book commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the artist's death and is illustrated throughout with his art, letters and sketches. 2. Rex Whistler, The Triumph of Fancy by Stephen Calloway. Published by Brighton Art Gallery in 2006 to accompany an exhibition of Rex Whistler's art, this book catalogues some of his work from childhood through to the 1940s. Condition: Both books are in good condition, with some sunning to the spines and light edgewear to the covers but remaining in strong readable condition.

This copy owned by J E (Jack) Morpurgo who has boldly signed the half-title page. Morpurgo was a publisher at Penguin, author, and head of the National Book League. Jack Morpurgo was known to both men and is referenced frequently throughout. A comprehensive history of 143rd Infantry Brigade, illustrated with maps and photographs. The main body of text is formed of the Brigade's service in the Great War, where they were on the Western Front from 1915 to 1917, from 1917 they were in Italy. They saw action in the first months of the Second World War but then were stationed in England until 1945. The book also lists Divisional and Brigade Commanders. Condition: This copy is in very good condition.

The recipient was a Spanish juror and pedagogue, and professor at Institución Libre de Enseñanza (the Spanish Free Insitute of Education). A selection from the poets to memorise arranged by 1. iambic movement, 2. trochaic movement, 3. anapaestic movement, 4. dactylic movement, and 5. poems of reverence. Poets include Wordsworth, Edgar Allan Poe, Coleridge, Tennyson etc. Condition: This copy is in very good condition, with some fading to the cloth spine.

Hardback, bound in the original cloth with gilt titling to spine. 19.5 × 11.5cm, 160pp. Cornelius Cayley (1727-1779) was an English religious writer and preacher. As a young man he lived beyond his means until, under the influence of James Hervey he started attending the Tabernacle at Moorfields, after which he had visions of death. The early death of one his brothers after such a vision and hearing George Whitefield preach in 1751 led to a conversion experience. This account was first published in 1757. Condition: A reading copy. The boards are rubbed and bumped, and the ffep is badly crinkled but the main body of text is in good, strong readable condition. Previous owner's name to title page.

Barbour from his mother C R Barbour (Charlotte Rachel), the inscription is dated 1929. A series of essays on international affairs from one of the architects of the League of Nations. The essays were written between 1918 and 1928 and had previously appeared in periodicals. This is quite a scarce first edition. Condition: Generally good condition. There is some rubbing to the joints and edges, and light foxing throughout. The inner binding is secure and the book is in solid, readable condition.

A fragment of a pageant written by Edward Charles, based around the last supper. Possibly irreverent as the author suggests in his preface. Edward Charles (real name Edward Charles Edmond Hemsted, b.1898) was an author, educator, social advocate and sexologist. His major work was The Sexual Impulse, and he was an important proponent of sexology, and in particular the promotion of contraception. Condition: The book is in very good condition, with a few specks of foxing. The slipcase is in good solid condition but is tanned and foxed around the edges and opening.

The first book is MacFarlane's study of social life in the South of Italy which originally appeared in the Penny Magazine between 1834 and 1845, and covers carnivals, horse-racing, maccaroni-eaters, the peasantry, wandering Italians, gipsies, shepherds etc, and the second title is an 1848 printing of Wilhelm Wittich's travels along the western coast of Norway written in a series of seven letters. Condition: This copy is in very good condition for age but the leather is rubbed and scuffed to the corners and joints. The inner binding is sound and the pages are clean.
