Description:
CHARITABLE ALMANAC FEATURING REVOLUTIONARY CULT --- 168; [1], 4-140; 35, [1]; viij, 40; civ, 120 p. | 12mo | A-G^12; A^12(-A12) B-E^12 F^10; A-C^6; a^4 A-C^6 D^2; *^12 b-d^12 e^4 A-E^12 | 152 x 86 mm --- The French Revolution brought with it a degree of religious chaos. At one end was simple suspicion of the long-established state-sanctioned Catholic order. At the other were extreme breaks from this tradition, evident most readily in the state-sponsored Cult of Reason and Robespierre's Cult of the Supreme Being. The former lasted a whole year, and the latter couldn't outlive Robespierre, executed in 1794. Yet some of those desires for a new religious order remained. Enter the Théophilantropes. "Trite and naïve though the pronouncements of the Théophilantropes may seem, the cult is extremely significant historically. Here we have an attempt to find common ground between all religions and sects" (McIntosh). This new religion took pains to espouse only those beliefs and values upon which… Read More

Description:
CATTLE PLAGUE BROADSIDE BY DR. FAUST --- 1 broadsheet | 463 x 363 mm --- One of at least a dozen broadside editions of the prolific German physician's advice on treating the devastating cattle plague. We find others published at Stuttgart, 1797; Bückeburg, 1797; Leipzig, 1797; Dresden, 1799; Bamberg, 1801; Leipzig, 1813; a 1797 edition without place of production; undated editions at Karlsruhe and Gotha; an 1800 French version, Strasbourg, and another undated French edition. We suspect the content derives from the author's much more extensive Über die Rindvieh-Pest
(Stuttgart, 1797). His advice was also issued in pamphlet form, on which subject our broadside has a terse promotional note at end: "I have also written a book on rinderpest. Read it!" No doubt selling advice from any Dr. Faust required extra effort (though he was admittedly quite respected and widely known for his Catechism of Health). At bottom are prices for the broadside, both individually and in wholesale quantities… Read More

Description:
AGAINST LITERARY IDOLATRY | ANNA MARIA VAN SCHURMAN CREDITED --- [16], 232, [8] p. | 8vo | )(^8 A-P^8 | 180 x 106 mm --- The much expanded second edition (novus potius liber) of this treatise against literary idolatry, which first appeared in 1728 as De Superstitione Erudita. The Cologne Diözesan- und Dombibliothek reports a 1726 edition, but this must be a mistake. Koecher's preface, dated 12 March 1738, opens with a reference to his De Superstitione Erudita (1728), which he mentions writing ten years prior (conscripsi edidique ante hos decem annos). Koecher seems particularly taken with his newly adopted turn of phrase, idololatria litteraria, which he credits to Anna Maria van Schurman (p. 3). ¶ To this edition, the author has added "many documented examples of this vice, which I describe and vituperate" (leaf )(5r). "We must surely consider those who, in veneration of the most learned men, a bit more hastily cross the boundary and limit; and we shall describe the vice, which we labor… Read More

Description:
EARLY MODERN MISERY ¶ [10], 271, [1] leaves | 12mo | A-Z^12 2A^6 | 135 x 70 mm ¶ Fourth edition, following those of 1520, 1528, and 1541, and the first to include Zaccaria Lilio's De miseria et fugacitate vitae and Saint John Chrysostom's Quod nemo laeditur nisi à se ipso. A collection of thirty-four sermons by the German Catholic theologian, who bore the sobriquet "hammer of heretics" for some of his work countering Protestant Reformers. The volume constitutes an early work dedicated entirely to the topic of human misery. Includes a six-page list of authors cited, replete with classical authors frequently invoked in the sermons. ¶ Faber's homilies come with upbeat titles like, "On the misery of the envious man," "On the misery of the repulsive lover," and "Why pleasant people live with misery and desperation" (translated). His "On tribulations" offers a horrifying litany of afflictions. All begin by citing the same verse from the Book of Tobias, which is often incorporated elsewhere… Read More

MARIE DE COTTEBLANCHE TRANSLATES SCIENCE --- [3], 5-661, [11]; [20], 422, [22] p. | 8vo | a-z^8 A-T^8; *^8 **^2 a-z^8 A-D^8 E^6 | 168 x 106 mm --- An early French translation of the Spanish humanist's encyclopedic collection of essays (Silva de varia lección), popular throughout Europe, here with the first edition of Du Verdier's continuation and imitation. Both are without any real order or structure, reminiscent of Aulus Gellius's Attic Nights, and cover topics ranging from the Amazons to snow to the end of the world. While the two works are often cataloged separately, the title of the former clearly suggests the latter was meant to accompany it. USTC 51616 records a 1576 Du Verdier, whose reported existence appears to stem from Brunet's citation. Baudrier, however, has this to say: "Du Verdier cites, among his own works [Du Verdier himself was a bibliographer], under the date 1576, Les diverses leçons. The dedication being dated 11 March 1577, we believe it's an error of the… Read More
