The inscription refers to "The American Spectator," a literary magazine that made its debut in October, 1932. In a rare departure from habit, O'Neill agreed to contribute some non-dramatic writings to the magazine. George Jean Nathan, Ernest Boyd, Theodore Dreiser and Cabell were also joint editors with O'Neill on this short-lived publication. Young was a Methodist minister who ended up living in Otisville, NY. The title poem is about a rock formation, called The Devil's Tea-Table, overlooking the Great Muskingum River in Morgan County, Ohio. Some foolish people dynamited the rock formation in the 1930s, probably for fun. Cake's daughter, Dorothy Lena Young, was an assistant to famous magician Harry Houdini. Signed presentation from Young and Cake on the front endpaper: "From Lu B. Cake, and (Rev.) Robert S. Young. Memento of a pleasant meeting and treasured acquaintance. May 7th, 1907.Otisville, NY."
