Signed presentation from Cabell on the front endpaper, to playwright Eugene O'Neill: "For Eugene O'Neill, as a fellow Spectator of polite letters, with the regards of Branch Cabell, 29 September, 1934." The inscription refers to "The American Spectator," a literary magazine that made its debut in October, 1932. In a rare departure from habit, O'Neill agreed to contribute some non-dramatic writings to the magazine. George Jean Nathan, Ernest Boyd, Theodore Dreiser and Cabell were also joint editors with O'Neill on this short-lived publication. With two unsigned presentations (from different people) on the front endpaper, each signed from a "good friend." The first is to George Percival Scriven, dated Nov. 30, 1889. The second is to "Bruce", dated Washington, May 1924. Scriven is a relative of Elizabeth Scriven, wife of Alfred Corning Clark, son of Singer Sewing Machine founder Edward Clark. With a small bookplate on the front pastedown, signed "Scriven." With the personal bookplates of Joseph Humphreys on the front pastedown, which is also signed in ink by Henry Humphreys. The bookplate was designed by Hazel A.V.
