Description:
Physical description and Materiality
Parchment, a substantially complete leaf, c.260×375mm, but the corners trimmed to allow mitering and one margin cropped to reduce the width to the required size, ruled in dry-point on the hair-side for two columns of 36 lines written above top line in a fine regular rounded late Caroline bookhand, with a rubric in red and an enlarged initial in red divided into two panels, foliated "cxlvj" in the middle of the upper margin.
The shape of the book that this leaf covered is clearly preserved; the very darkened spine still has one of two paper labels preserved, inscribed with a shelfmark "[…] 5. b | 29", and rows of holes show where the cover was sewn to the boards. Unlike the vast majority of medieval manuscript leaves re-used as book covers (including those in this catalogue), the outer face is almost entirely blank: this cannot be due to fading or ordinary wear-and-tear, and shows that the binder have deliberately and carefully erased the text, probably with a… Read More

Description:
The sixth edition. Newly amended and enlarged by Mr. William Cowper, minister of Gods Word.

[16], 216, [4], 217-398, [6], 399-457, [13] p. ; 4⁰.

First blank is A1 and title is A2. New endpapers. 3 title pages. A very good and solid copy with no problems. Text is printed within ruled borders and, although sometime trimmed, the margins are good. Recently rebound in black half-calf over raised bands. Marbled boards. Label.

This work was originally titled "Three treatises upon the eighth chapter to the Romanes", hence the three separate title pages.

Not to be confused with the English poet, William Cowper, or Couper, was Bishop of Galloway in Scotland (1568-1619).

This was the sixth and final edition published of this work. It is uncommon at auction, only 1 record in the past 70 years.
