The race was first held on the River Thames at Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire in 1829, from 1856 onward, the race has been held annually (excepting the years covering the 2 World Wars). There have been 3 different courses rowed over the years, however, the present course is just over 4 miles (6km) long, and is rowed between Putney and Mortlake in south west London each spring.
