Within the Aztec sky religion is Quetzalcoatl, a fire serpent, a being of rainbow colors, as well as many other baffling avatars. The author intends this book to be a contribution to the history of religion, it is part of the Civilization of the American Indian series in which the four major categories of Aztec religious thought are discussed. It is the product of the authors long-term familiarity with the prehispanic Mesoamerican world and it represents considerable knowledge of Mesoamerican theology and iconography. The author references data derived from Spanish observers, native documents dating from the time of conquest and before and archeological finds.
