Of course it's inconvenient to have to go to Bridger to get a beefsteak or a box of matches. . .. This work is tedious and presents some worry nearly every day. My crop is apt to fall short, [but] My pasture feed is very fair yet. . .. As I sit out front of the cabin and look southward, viewing the beautiful Unita mountains, I know how much Ma would enjoy the same. They have almost lost their snow - only a shot here and there on the highest peaks. I hope there'll… Read More

"At the request of Col Fremont I send you the inclosed answer to the charge made at the Attorney Genl's Office of fraud in the Survey of his Mariposa Grant."
San Francisco, 1859. Unbound.
Both Blair and James had been free-soil Democrats who were instrumental in both forming the new Republican Party in 1856 and securing John C. Fremont to run for President on its ticket. Although, Fremont was not one of the major candidates to represent the Republicans in his hat was still in the ring, and this letter suggests that he, Blair, and James were preparing to defend against lingering political charges of fraud regarding his ownership of the most important California goldfield, the Mariposa Ranch.
James's letter is datelined "San Francisco / Aprl 5th 1859 reads,
"My Dear Sir / At the request of Col Fremont I send you the inclosed answer to the charge made at the Attorney Genl's Office of fraud in the Survey of his Mariposa Grant."

Description:
Westminster, England: Wynkyn de Word, 1538. Disbound. Very good. The Golden Legend, or Legenda sanctorum (Readings of the Saints) is a collection of 153 hagiographies originally compiled by Jacobus de Voragine between 1259 and 1266. It was one of the most popular texts of the Middle Ages and printed throughout Europe in more editions than the Bible. It is, in effect, an encyclopedia of the saints with its chapters organized by the date of their feast days. This leaf (approximately 7" x 10") is from the English translation, a later edition, by William Claxton printed at Westminster by Wynkyn de Worde in 1498. 47 lines of text plus headline. Double column. It is headlined "The lyfe of Saynt Edwarde kynge & cofessour." This was King Edward the Martyr who ruled from 975 to 978 when he was assassinated at the order of his stepmother, the Dowager Queen Ælfthryth. While the Golden Legend claims he was stabbed by a member of the kitchen staff, other accounts claim it was by a band of traitorous… Read More

Description:
New York City, 1897. Unbound. Very good. This example of the first U.S. paid-reply postal card set (Scott #UY1) is unsevered; the postal message card (Scott #PM1) remains attached to its postal reply card (Scott #PR1). The indicia on both one-cent cards feature a portrait of Ulysses S. Grant as President. The postal message card was sent from D. Appleton and Company to Lieutenant J. C. Bush, U.S. Army at New York City's Governor's Island. It bears a duplex New York City postmark dated October 2, 1897. The postal reply card is uncancelled; it features an illustration in gold, blue-black, and gilt of a set of Appleton's Military Library Great Commanders Series. There is a near invisible two-inch mended split along the right edge of the message. Still in nice shape with little other wear; displays well from either side. The text accompanying the illustration of the book set reads in part: "Miniature Reproduction of "The Army and Navy" Artistic Edition of / Appleton's Military Library Great… Read More

Description:
New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, 1923.
This 8" x 6" album contains 37 b/w photographs, each measuring approximately 4.75" x 3". The crisp, well-composed snapshots are chronologically arranged and neatly glued to the album pages. Most have been captioned in white, but much of the writing has faded.
In addition to the rugged workmen, equipment, and environment of 1920s oil fields, these images show the men's Model T Ford, roadside tent camping, and a big campsite at Cleveland's Euclid Beach Park. Ohio became home to one of the first oil booms in the United States in the 1860s after a blacksmith, William Jeffrey, drilled a successful well in Trumbull County. The discovery of oil near Woodville in 1892 started a boom that lasted until 1905 by which time the area was mostly drained although drilling and pumping continued in a few of the area's fields.
A historically valuable visual record of life as a traveling roughneck in the eastern oil fields.
Rather scarce. At the time of this listing, no other Ohio… Read More
