Description:
New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1989. First Editions. Hardcover. Fine/very good +. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing in a Fine dust jacket, SIGNED BY TOM CLANCY on the half-title, TOGETHER WITH AN ORIGINAL SIGNED LETTER FROM TOM CLANCY TO THE WIDOW OF JOHN BALL TO WHOM THIS BOOK WAS DEDICATED. The letter is in excellent condition and shows two horizontal folds for mailing and some slight bending to its upper left corner. The book itself is sharp, unfaded, with bright gilt lettering and is without the concavity to the spine that plagues most copies and the dust jacket has only modest bits of loss to the laminate (another matter that we frequently have seen on this dust jacket) and some wear to the extremities at the spine ends and to the edges where the spine turns to each flap. [In spite of such small flaws, this is otherwise easily the nicest example of the dust jacket that we ever have seen. The book's first edition was published both in a silver jacket and in a bronze jacket,… Read More

New York: Random House, 1990. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. An Essentially Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (slight push to the spine head, some fading to the board extremities; J. M. Coetzee's sixth novel. The book won the 1990 Sunday Express Book of the Year, the most lucrative prize for novels in Britain at the time. The tale presents a picture of social and political tragedy unfolding in a country ravaged by racism and violence; an excellent work on South African apartheid and its effect on that nation's people. J. M. Coetzee won the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature for being a writer "who in innumerable guises portrays the surprising involvement of the outsider." In his Presentation Speech for the Prize, Per Wästberg of the Swedish Academy stated: "Coetzee sees through the obscene poses and false pomp of history, lending voice to the silenced and the despised. Restrained but stubborn, he defends the ethical value of poetry, literature and imagination. Without them, we… Read More

Writing under the pen name "Marie Corelli, Mary Mackay enjoyed great success as a writer and, prior to World War I, sales of her novels exceeded the combined sales of her now better-known contemporaries, including Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells, and Rudyard Kipling. She also was a favorite writer of Winston-Churchill, Randolph Churchill, and Britain's Royal Family. Set a the turn to the Twentieth Century, "Temporal Power" depicts the machinations and troubles concerning the Royal family and the politicians in power in a fictional England.
