The members of the train kept together as far as El Paso, despite bad organization, poor planing, and downright malfeasance on the part of the expedition's management. Chapters VII - IX deal with his life in the Civil War as a doctor with a Iowa Regiment. He saw the Battle of Prairie Grove in Arkansas, surrender of Vicksburgh, Shelby's raid repulsed, and discusses Quantrill's Raid, and the burning and massacre of Lawrence, Kansas. He also reports on Pilot Knob, released prisoners from Andersonville, and his commissions from Lincoln. A rare and virtually unknown Civil War personal narrative.

A scarce imprint from what was likely the "third and last press made for printing with the Sequoyah syllabary" (CHRONICLES OF OKLAHOMA, cited in Foreman). Amory Nelson Chamberlin represented his family's third generation of missionaries to the Cherokee, operating from a church in Pheasant Hill, near what is now Vinita, Oklahoma. "Mr. Chamberlin devoted all his time to teaching, preaching, translating books, hymns and parts of the Bible and to any other service which promised to contribute to the mental, moral, spiritual and social development of the people who came under his influence. Both these works were published posthumously by Lundy, her editor, as "genius of universal emancipation." Lundy was a three time visitor to Texas. Shaw 36587-36588. Chandler was born in Delaware and in 1830 settled in Michigan with her brother on a farm in Lenawee County, near the village of Tecumseh, about 60 miles southwest of Detroit.
