Description:
Paris, Au Bureau du Journal d'Economie rurale et domestique, 1803. 8vo (18.3 x 11.5 cm). 248 pp., eight engraved plates. Later, partly 19th-century, wrappers. = Possibly the first monograph on the mole, with notes on its habits and habitats, ways to exterminate the animal, and insects found in and on mole burrows and dead moles, all (including the insects) finely engraved on eight plates that have been numbered in a seemingly random order, viz. 7, 3, 4, 1, 5, 2, 8, 6. The author is the French chemist-pharmacist Antoine-Alexis-François Cadet de Vaux (1743-1828), who published several works on wine, coffee, tobacco and other economically important agricultural products. Since this work contains much practical advice to the gardener, it must have been prone to wear and loss; unsurprisingly, the title page is lacking, and the work now has become rare. Binding weak. Internally quite clean. Not in Nissen ZBI.

Washington, DC, and other places, 1878-1902. 44 malacological papers in one (including 26 original papers). 8vo (22.6 x 14.8 cm). Numerous pages and plates. Red buckram with gilt title on the spine. = The American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) wrote a number of biographies and bibliographies of American malacological authors in the series, Occasional Papers on Mollusks, published by the Museum of Comparative Zoology, in Cambridge, MA. As a basis for these papers, he accumulated the published works of these malacologists in one or more bound, chronologically arranged, convolutes. Often adding previous biographies, obituaries, etc. Not necessarily he used original offprints or excerpts - although this is certainly true for many of the more obscure works - but also photocopies of texts already contained elsewhere in his vast library, e.g., in periodicals such The Nautilus, Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, and the Proceedings of the United States National… Read More

Description:
Paris, Theodore Dabo, 1803. Folio (46.0 x 31.0 cm) with one fine engraved portrait by B. Roger and 34 engraved plates. Original blind wrappers. = Rare atlas to this important comparative anatomical monograph by the Dutch physician, anatomist, zoologist, and palaeontologist Petrus Camper (1722-1789) on apes and, particularly, on elephants, manatees, and horses, with some unusual, if not original, views (e.g. the elephant, from below). Also covers frogs, etc. Another novel idea in comparative zoology is the juxtaposition, with the spine as centre, of a human and a horse. "One of the first scholar to study comparative anatomy, Petrus Camper demonstrated the principle of correlation in all organisms by the mechanical exercise he called a 'metamorphosis'. In his 1778 lecture, 'On the points of similarity between the human species, quadrupeds, birds, and fish; with rules for drawing, founded on this similarity,' he metamorphosed a horse into a human being, thus showing the similarity… Read More

Black morocco label with gilt title. All edges speckled red. = Important contribution to the knowledge of primate anatomy and the origin of speech. The Dutch medical doctor, anatomist, zoologist, and palaeontologist Petrus Camper (1722-1789) studied the orang-utan (literally "wood man") from the East Indies in order to prove that it was not the same animal known from Africa under that name, and to establish why the orang, so close to man, was not able to speak. Contained in Part I, of the 1779 Philosophical Transactions, together with 20 unrelated papers, including a mathematical paper by Edward Waring, a paper by John Fothergill, On a Cure of St. Vitus's Dance by Electricity, and several astronomical contributions communicated by Nevil Maskelyne. This is the atlas only, but the work is very rare in any state. Do not confuse this with the 1970's reprint.
