Description:
New York: Balllantine, 1974. Calendar. Very Good/No Jacket. A rare 1975 Edition of the MC. Escher calendar. Those who are familiar with this artist's work will need no further explanation. For those NOT familiar, no explanation is possible (without giving me a headache!). Suffice to say that Escher specialises in the production of complex, apparently impossible, visual conumdrums and makes them seem possible. Twelve of his works are reproduced here in colour and black & white, together of course with the original calendar pages. A fascinating collection to cut out and frame, or keep as a collector's item. Comes in the original cardboard mailing envelope from Ballantine Books (but additionaly protected by me). Page size is 28.5 x 33cm, and all in very good condition. Front cover shows diagonal crease on bottom left corner, else very good.

Marlborough: Crowood Press, 1989. First UK edition. Hardcover. Fair/Good. The author was serving as a marine aboard the USS Houston when it was sunk by the Japanese in May, 1942. Taken prisoner, he was held for the next forty-three months in slave labour camps in Burma, Thailand and Saigon. This is the vivid account of his ordeal - and that of thousands of other Alllied POWs - under barbaric conditions. Above all, it is the story of an unsung hero, Dr Henri Hekking, a medic with the Dutch Colonial Army, who at great personal risk, saved the lives of hundreds of prisoners (including that of the author) through his knowledge of wild jungle herbs and their medical applications. Originally published in the US in 1988, this is the First UK Edition. Contains 209 pages, 23 x 15cm, 18 pages of b&w photos and 1 map. Ex-library, front endpaper removed, some library markings. London: Thames&Hudson, 1983. Hardcover. Good/fair. The first - and possibly only - attempt to bring together all that is known about Stonehenge at the time of publication (1983). Here you will find details of the antiquarians and archaeologists who have dug there over the last 400-years, together with all their findings and theories. Illlustrates the monument using works from the past 800-years, from manuscript iluminators to recent photographers, including the two greatest English water-colour painters, Constable and Turner, with Bill Brandt and Henry Moore amongst the modern masters. Looks at Stonehenge in literature and the arts, folklore, advertising and the history of tourism. Along the way we learn how this unique edifice has been threatened down the years by souvenir-hunters, railway builders, speculative builders, showmen and the army - plans were afoot at one stage to ship it wholesale to America. A truly unique and fascinating volume for archaeologists, ancient historians or anyone with a… Read More

Description:
New York: PublicAffairs, 2003. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Trenchant, brilliantly incisive and boldly analytical, this is both a celebration of American military strength and a thoughtful critique of US geo-strategy. Described as a vital contribution to the on-going debate on the best way to secure the future for America and a gripping narrative of events in the world's most modern theatre of war. The author pulls no punches in highlighting vital mistakes made in pre- and post-war planning, and challenges the logic that an attack on Iraq should become the key to American security. Contains 218-pages, 24 x 16cm. Ex-library, front endpaper removed, some library markings. Black/Tan boards in very good illustrated dust jacket. Internally, very good: clean and unmarked in excellent bindings. Exceptionally good condition for an ex-library example.
