London: T. Osborne (et al), 1761. All 4 volumes, contemporary banded calf, banded spines (some legibility difficult). Most hinges loose and starting. Gilt-ruled coves. Ex-library with plate of the Theological Seminary Library (Gettysburg, Pa.), with de-acquisition stamp; numerous library markings, including on spine. All 6 folding, copperplate engraved maps by Thomas Jefferys (Europe, Africa, Madagascar & Zanzibar, Asia, North America, South America) are very good or better (b&w as issued). Numerous portraits of naval figures. Text intact in all 4 volumes (587pp, 580pp, 488pp, 519pp). A very nice, uncommon, early set, although apparently Campbell wasn't that knowledgeable about some of his subjects. Samuel Johnson was a friend and acquaintance of the author. . 3rd.

VG, all maps and plates present:The United States, General Map of North America, Pantography of American History, British Possessions in America, View of Quebec, View of Havannah, Chart of the Constitutions of the United States, View of Philadelphia, Mexico (Spanish Possessions), West Indies, Cuba (with St. Domingo, Jamaica and Bahama Islands), SOuth America, Colombia, Brazil, View of Rio Janeiro, United Provinces (and Chili), View of Monte Video (and Plan of the Harbor). All in very good or better condition with folds as issued and original hand coloring. A short tear at the attachment of the consitution plate was repaired verso with archival tape, as were a couple of fold separations (no serious image loss) on the Cuba map. The Morris Peters Co. (Photo-Litho), Washington, 1895 (Letter from the Secretary of War, 53d Congress, H.Ex.Doc. No. 295). B&W, VG w/usual fragile paper and a few small crease tears. This is a HUGE map, with inset: Index Map, Steamboat Channel Between.... Elaborate and very organized depth soundings in this area of the SC and GA coastal border, ending at the mouth of th e Savannah River. Turtle Island recieves the largest representation on the main map, although there is no interior detail. The 7 page text of the transmittal letter (from Daniel S. Lamont, Secretary of War) is included, as is a smaller map (area bet ween New and Cooper Rivers) on heavier paper: Map of Ramshorn Creek, S.C....December 1894. The large main map is 69x110cm. The smaller item is 24x93cm..

London: J Cary, 1806. VG+ fully hand colored map of the region. Australia labeled as New Holland. The map goes west to the eastern African shore, with Madagascar shown. Minimal centerfold browning probably related to the old glue, but no significant image loss. Cary is generally regarded as one of the finest English cartographers, and this plate would bear witness. This is a striking piece, measuring 46x52cm (18x20.5 inches). .

Paris, 1720. Ex-Lib (Univ. of Chicago, Berlin), with usual interior markings. Leather boards chipped and separating, with spine chipped (could be rebound; binding tight), with engraved frontis. 306pp, 15 plates, 5 folding maps (mostly France). Interior VG+, with maps and plates in similar condition. This volume was produced as part of a series in the memoirs of the Royal Academy of Sciences for the year 1718. Cassni was a member of the Royal Society and Academy of Sciences, and also a director of the Paris Observatory, where he succeeded his father (Jean-Dominique). This is a scarce volume..

Rome: Cassini, 1798. VG+ w/early hand color. This map is part of a 6-sheet wall map from a major Italian atlas, the 4 volume "Nuovo atlante geographico."The maps were known for attractive cartouches, and this is no exception, with a bearded male lounging by a body of water. The Mississippi River dominate s the central portion of the map. "Luigiana" is shown to the west of the river. Various native american tribal locations are given. The image measures 33.5x47.5cm. The date within the title cartouche is 1797.. First Edition. Very Good. Map.

Some soiling and foxing.Over 100 nice b&w steel-plate engravings> Map towards end of text with nice outline color, clean paper, small tear near left side fold not significantly affecting image: Map of Southern and central Africa, Based on the Astronomical Ovservations Surveys and Sketches of Dr. David Livingstone... Paris, 1785. Very good condition, early outline hand color, nice margins, published when Delamarche was at "Rue du Foin St. Jacques au College de Mtre. Gervais." Minimal foxing and marginal browning. The main focus of the map is east of the Mississippi River, and includes southeastern Canada. There is a table of the post-revolutionary war states and respective capitols in the lower right corner. One other interesting feature, below the list of states, is another list of "proposed states." These entries are from the Land Ordinance of 1784, which was superceded by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Thomas Jefferson was involved in these matters, and some of the proposed states (as of the 1784 document) as listed on this map, were: Silvania, Michigania, Chersonesus, Arsenistpia, Metropotamia, Illinoia, Saratoga, Washington, Polypotamia, and Pelisypia. Amsterdam: Chez Freres Chatelain Libraries, 1708. VG+ engraving, b&w as issued. This attractive plate has a number of engraved views/vignettes showing the functioning assemblies, along with a good bit of textual detail, As expected, the text is in French. This is from Tome III (vol. 3) of Chatelain's wonderful "Atlas Historique". The engraved double-page image with surrounding text mesures 14x18 inches..
