Pencil checkmarks on a lot of items (reason unknown -- perhaps just confirming that those items had come up for auction). Prices realized are noted in pencil for items 326-440. The vast majority of items appear to be Japanese although there are a number of Chinese items and a few identified as Corean. Items 411-438 are identified as Turkish and Japanese rugs.

Envelope not preserved. William was a Scottish-born Presbyterian missionary from Massachusetts. Saharanpur was caught up in what is now called the First (Indian) War of Independence one year after this letter was written. Elizabeth died in 1859 and was buried in the Scottish Cemetery in Calcutta.
