Decorative paper over boards (printed in orange and green), white cloth backstrip lettered in dark green; two volumes, 12mo; pp. [4], iv, 83; [4], iv, 76. Book design by A. C. Berlage. Library records indicate a publication date of 1915, and locate 5 copies worldwide. Bindings just a bit shelf-worn overall, with some fading to the spine lettering and light chipping at the corners. One instance of marginalia -- a previous owner's careful attempt at a stenography lesson, in purple ink. A handsome set. And uncommon.

Early vellum over boards, gilt-stamped lettering in orange leather spine label; 8vo (152 x 225 mm); pp. [4] (title-page, blank, sommaire des principaux), 664, [28], with numerous woodcut illustrations (showing surgical instruments and operations, and anatomical details). Library records indicate that it's missing 16 preliminary pages, but it's textually complete, with all engravings. Title-page printed in red and black, with woodcut vignette. Boards a little soiled, and flaring somewhat. First 2 leaves (title-p., sommaire) lightly chipped along the edges and just a little soiled, with faint contemporary notations. The rest of the text block is remarkably bright and clean. An excellent copy. This posthumous second edition is a slightly larger format than previous editions.

From the library of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. (1909-2000), an American actor (his credits include “Gunga Din”) and a highly decorated naval officer of World War II. With a lengthy inscription to Fairbanks on the FFEP, nicely hinting at some of the weirdness you'll find herein. Includes beauty rituals, instructions on calisthenics, and a questionnaire to help determine how much poise one naturally possesses, before this little gem of absurdities intervenes to edify.

Full-color illustrated paper over boards; folio; pp. 237, [4], with b/w illustrations in text, plus a frontispiece, 16 double-page colored plates, and 32 double-page plates in b/w. Number 57 from a limited edition of 100 copies for collaborators, family, and friends (total edition of 700 copies). Boards lightly rubbed and soiled; spine tips lightly rubbed; corners bumped. Endpapers a bit foxed, otherwise text block is bright and clean -- some pages still unopened. A massive and lavishly produced history of the French "Game of the Goose," and its many variations. Includes a bibliography.

Original drawing in black ink on white heavy cardstock paper, 235x279mm, showing two women whispering at a country fence, with two men in the background. Signed and located (Paris) by the artist, and with a title handwritten in the bottom margin, "Entre Nous! (Between Us!)" -- though the English translation is crossed out in blue pencil. A little dust-smudging, else fine, suitable for display. Charles Austin Danforth was born in Boston, MA. He was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Providence Art Club. He exhibited at the Boston Art Club (1881, 1882), the Paris Salon (1886, 1887, 1893), and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1888, 1890).

Spine tips and corners lightl bumped; faint damp-stain in upper right corner of text block, just touching images on the first 6 plates; a bit foxed throughout.

Covers rubbed and dust-smudged; spine and corners lightly chipped; first few leaves a little dog-eared at corners, but contents are overall nice and clean, suitable for display.

New Hampshire, 1900. Hardcover. Very Good+. Manuscript Drawing Notebook of Arthur Lee Newton, signed by him on the title page. Bound in original 3/4 leather and green cloth; first prize label fixed to front board. 60 pages of drawings; shapes, anatomical studies, zoological studies, and a portrait of George Washington among the efforts. A fine sketchbook displaying strong skill. Newton was a pioneer in the American automotive industry, eventually with the title of president of the Glidden Buick Corporation. An obituary stated that he had sold more automobiles at retail than any other man in the world. At Dartmouth, he was a track star, winning five U.S. championships, and became a two-time Olympian. At the Olympic Games in St. Louis in 1904, Newton medalled in both the Steeplechase and the Marathon.

A coulple of signatures beginning to loosen. Darwin's book ends with the following lines: "We must, however, acknowledge, as it seems to me, that man with all his noble qualities, with sympathy which feels for the most debased, with benevolence which extends not only to other men but to the humblest living creature, with his god-like intellect which has penetrated into the movements and constitution of the solar system — with all these exalted powers — Man still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin."

London: J. Johnson, 1791. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to. Two parts bound as one. Early leather, rebacked with modern spine. Complete with 18 plates (five of which are attributed to William Blake). This copy with the early ownership signature of Louisa Ponsonby. The hope for the book (a scientific poem in two parts), Darwin wrote, was “to enlist Imagination under the banner of Science . . . to induce the ingenious to cultivate the knowledge of botany . . . and recommending to their attention the immortal works of the celebrated Swedish naturalist Linnaeus.” (Dictionary of Scientific Biography).

London: J. Johnson, 1800. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 4to. 19th century diced gilt-ruled calf. With 12 finely engraved plates. This copy has a nice provenance, with early ownership signature of James Law, a Lichfield resident, as was Erasmus Darwin. Later bookplate of Marshall Laird to front pastedown. The content of this marvelous book ranges from a poem on broccoli, to a detailing of the struggle for existence (xix.7); a struggle that his grandson, Charles, would elaborate on sixty years later.
