Library records indicate a publication date of 1915, and locate 5 copies worldwide. Bindings just a bit shelf-worn overall, with some fading to the spine lettering and light chipping at the corners. One instance of marginalia -- a previous owner's careful attempt at a stenography lesson, in purple ink. A handsome set. And uncommon.

Early vellum over boards, gilt-stamped lettering in orange leather spine label; 8vo (152 x 225 mm); pp. [4] (title-page, blank, sommaire des principaux), 664, [28], with numerous woodcut illustrations (showing surgical instruments and operations, and anatomical details). Library records indicate that it's missing 16 preliminary pages, but it's textually complete, with all engravings. Title-page printed in red and black, with woodcut vignette. Boards a little soiled, and flaring somewhat. First 2 leaves (title-p., sommaire) lightly chipped along the edges and just a little soiled, with faint contemporary notations. The rest of the text block is remarkably bright and clean. An excellent copy. This posthumous second edition is a slightly larger format than previous editions.

Original drawing in black ink on white heavy cardstock paper, 235x279mm, showing two women whispering at a country fence, with two men in the background. Signed and located (Paris) by the artist, and with a title handwritten in the bottom margin, "Entre Nous! (Between Us!)" -- though the English translation is crossed out in blue pencil. A little dust-smudging, else fine, suitable for display. Charles Austin Danforth was born in Boston, MA. He was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Providence Art Club. He exhibited at the Boston Art Club (1881, 1882), the Paris Salon (1886, 1887, 1893), and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1888, 1890).

New Hampshire, 1900. Hardcover. Very Good+. Manuscript Drawing Notebook of Arthur Lee Newton, signed by him on the title page. Bound in original 3/4 leather and green cloth; first prize label fixed to front board. 60 pages of drawings; shapes, anatomical studies, zoological studies, and a portrait of George Washington among the efforts. A fine sketchbook displaying strong skill. Newton was a pioneer in the American automotive industry, eventually with the title of president of the Glidden Buick Corporation. An obituary stated that he had sold more automobiles at retail than any other man in the world. At Dartmouth, he was a track star, winning five U.S. championships, and became a two-time Olympian. At the Olympic Games in St. Louis in 1904, Newton medalled in both the Steeplechase and the Marathon.

The content of this marvelous book ranges from a poem on broccoli, to a detailing of the struggle for existence (xix.7); a struggle that his grandson, Charles, would elaborate on sixty years later.
