Description:
¶ Chutzpah: "Un libro sui libri falsi, scritto da un falsario, stampato in un falso luogo di stampa (Amstelodami, come nell'antichità) e con un marchio editoriale (quello di Aldo Manuzio) contraffatto, quindi falso." (S. Berni, Gingko 2020.01.11.) The title-page reads scelte; the cover has scielte, which was Aldo's spelling. The imprint "èinaudito" is a pun on Einaudi and è inaudito "it is unheard of". · ¶ First edition (only edition), one of only 150 numbered copies distributed mostly at the Milan book fair 18-19 January 2020 and quickly exhausted. The present copy is numbered LXIV. It was acquired in the rare-book trade April 2020. Thus its purchase here will not enrich Sig. De Caro. — ¶ Collation: 200 x 105 mm (7⅞ x 4⅛ inches): Thirty-three leaves, paginated [1]-[65] [66 blank]. Illustration: Seven halftone facsimiles (title-pages &c). Binding: Pictorial wrappers. Pictorial black dust-jacket, Aldine device lettered "ALD VS" (sic) in silver. Condition: Fine.

Description:
Aix-en-Provence: H. Gaudibert, 1829 *** ONLY EDITION; CONTAINING NINETY-EIGHT FABLES IN PROVENCAL (OCCITAN) VERSE glossed in French, together with a verse prologue celebrating La Fontaine and a long introductory essay in French on the Provencal language. The latter was written originally for an etymological dictionary whose publication had been delayed and which was, in fact, never published. ONE OF ONLY 200 COPIES, printed for friends of the author and fans of 'lo gai saber'--ie, the Troubadour aesthetic. (The allusion here is to the Consistori del Gai Saber, a literary school or circle established at Toulouse in 1323, which codified Troubadour versification and fostered Troubadour-revival poetry slams.) -- Known for his numerous and charming poems and songs, the author was born at Eguilles, a commune about six miles northwest of Aix, on 19 September 1771. He taught for some years at Eguilles, and then married the owner of a silkworm-farm at Rognes. He moved afterwards to Aix, where he served as the…

Description:
FIRST EDITION (only edition), one of 200 numbered copies, this being no. 77 INSCRIBED AND SIGNED "For Jay Dillon-- Who solved the sine of 4 (and came up with the Seven-per cent solution)-- Josh Pachter" in blue ink on the upper wrapper recto. -- -- The allusion, of course, is to the mathematical sine of four degrees, which is 0.0696 (Pachter's imprint) or seven percent. This alludes in turn to Conan Doyle's "seven-per-cent. solution" in 'The sign of four' 1890 page 3, which begs the question: Did Doyle himself know that seven percent is the sine of four? (And if not, then why not six percent? or eight?) -- --
This is quite a two-pipe problem. -- --
Collation: 280 x 217 mm (11 × 8½ inches): Twenty-four leaves paginated [i-ii] [1] 2-33 [34-46 blank], including the cover-title on gray paper as issued, errata-slip laid in. Binding: Wire-stitched as shown, as issued. Condition: The upper wrapper moderately stained as shown, else very good. -- --
