GRASSET, Eugène Samuel. Jeanne D'Arc/Sarah Bernhardt. Plate no.174, signed by Grasset. Measures approximately 15.75 x 11.41 inches. Lithographic plate. Paris: Imprimerie Chaix, 1899. Sarah Bernhardt, as Joan of Arc, is shown in armor with sword and flag. Arrows fly past her, while behind her pikes and spears are raised to a dark sky. The poster was commissioned by Sarah Bernhardt, the French actress, to advertise her stage appearance in the role of Jeanne d'Arc, or Joan of Arc, and Grasset clearly evokes the saint's piety in the design of the poster, which strongly ressembles a stained glass window. Grasset worked in Paris, France in a variety of creative design fields during the Belle Époque; he is considered a pioneer of Art Nouveau, though his workalso brought him into contact with the Montmartre circle of artists including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. recorded in American institutions. A white man on horseback chases them with a rifle on one shoulder, pausing to aim at the men. One of the native men drags a small horse by a rope while a cow and her calf run alongside, swept up in the chaos, presumably stolen. A sheep runs ahead. The animals eyes are wild and the native men's expressions cold, their postures warlike. One native man in the distance turns toward the cabin behind them and raises his spear in the air. [Lesbian] [Autobiography] DE ACOSTA, Mercedes. Here Lies the Heart: A Tale of my Life. New York: Reynal and Co. 1960. First edition, first printing. Cloth yellow boards with black cloth spine. Decorated dust jacket with mylar wrapper. 8vo., (xii), 372pp. Born to an affluent Cuban-American family in 1892, Mercedes de Acosta was a novelist, playwright, and poet but was more renowned for her controversial lesbian affairs with early 20th century Hollywood starlets. Being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1960, Acosta decided to write her most revealing and seminal memoir Here Lies the Heart: A Tale of my Life, though it read to the public as more of an exposé. Acosta was met with harsh criticism for her cavalier attitude towards homosexuality, and even harsher backlash from some of the celebrities she claimed to have these "lesbian affairs" with, such as Greta Garbo, and Eva Le Gallienne to name only a few. Marlene Dietrich, being a rebellious and gender bending woman herself, was one of the only big name… Read More
