Description:
Cleveland, OH: Arthur H. Clark Company, 1918. First Edition. Cloth. Good. 8vo. Red cloth. Deckle edge. 351 pp. Top of spine covering removed. Edges scuffed and corners bumped. Ex-library from the John Crerar research library at the University of Chicago. Crerar bookplate pasted inside front cover and several withdrawal stamps in front matter. Sticker for Jerrold Nedwick, bookseller, pasted inside rear cover. Tight and clean. This is a scarce first edition of a significant volume on American exploration, containing the journals of William Henry Ashley and Jedediah Strong Smith, Missouri fur traders whose passage to the Pacific Northwest comprised a significant portion of the Oregon Trail. Ashley and Smith had been largely forgotten by historians until the publication of this book, which restored their names to the canon of great American explorers. (Howes D21, Rader 1040, in Cowan, Jennewein 7, Zamorano 80-25).
